Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to major in music to be in the band?
Absolutely not! The FMB boasts a huge variety of majors from all across the University, with only about 20% of our students being music majors! We are proud to have many different majors represented in the band!
Do I have to audition?
Currently auditions are held for all Drumline, Twirler, and Color Guard spots. Please check those websites for more information. If you are a wind player, just fill out the Intent to March form and then sign up for the class!
Is marching band an academic class?
YES! The Falcon Marching Band is an academic course on the Main Campus of Bowling Green State University. All members of the ensemble must be registered for the class in order to participate. Each student should register for MUSP 4390E and select the 1001, 1002, or 1003 section based on your instrument.
- Brass and Woodwinds: Register for MUSP 4390E Section 1001
- Percussion: Register for MUSP 4390E Section 1002
- Color Guard and Twirlers: Register for MUSP 4390E Section 1003
Is there a fee for band?
No. The FMB does not have a specific fee attached to it. However, if you need an instrument, you will have to pay an instrument rental fee. You will also need to purchase black Drillmaster shoes if you don't already own them.
Do I have to own an instrument?
No. We are able to provide most instruments, and all of our Drumline, Mellophones, Baritones, and Sousaphones are provided by the FMB.
How many students are in the band?
In 2024 we had approximately 425 members of the band.
How often does the band perform?
The FMB has a busy performing schedule. We perform at a variety of events throughout the fall semester, throughout the fall semester, including University events, football games, concerts, regional marching band shows, parades, other athletic events, national and international events, and many more! What is the instrumentation of the FMB?
The Falcon Marching Band uses a standard marching band instrumentation with each of the following instruments:
- Flutes
- Piccolos
- Clarinets
- Alto saxophones
- Tenor saxophones
- Trumpets
- Mellophones
- Trombones
- Bass Trombones
- Baritones
- Sousaphones
- Drumline: Snares, Tenors, Cymbals, Bass Drums
