BGSU Tuba/Euphonium Professor to premiere Tuba Concerto

On Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 8 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theater, Toledo Symphony Music Director Alain Trudel will lead a breathtaking program that brings together three famous Russian composers: Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, and Stravinsky. The concert on Saturday evening also features the world premiere of Samuel Adler’s Tuba Concerto performed by the Toledo Symphony’s very own David Saltzman who is also the Tuba and Euphonium instructor at Bowling Green State University.

“I’m beyond excited and incredibly humbled to be a part of bringing this brand new piece of music to life,” said David Saltzman, Principal Tuba of the Toledo Symphony. I have been a fan of Sam’s music from the first time I played a piece of his in high school. I have loved the challenge of finding my voice in this complex and challenging work. I especially love the first movement, which Sam has written as a “Cantilation” affirming our collaboration not only as musicians, but as Jewish musicians. It is my hope that even if you know nothing about Jewish music there will be moments in this opening section where something of his and my shared heritage can be heard.”

Following the world premiere, nationally acclaimed Canadian painter Holly Carr will join the Toledo Symphony Orchestra on-stage to create a panoramic silk painting during a live performance of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

“I am really thrilled about this program,” says Toledo Symphony President & CEO, Zak Vassar. “We will be able to watch Holly Carr’s silhouette illustrate the story of the Firebird in real-time. This builds upon our 2012 collaboration with artist Felix de la Concha, who painted portraits of our orchestra members while the Symphony performed Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky. Now, as then, I think our audience will appreciate the multisensory impact that the combination of live music and live art provides.”

Oversized, backlit silk panels will fill the back wall of the Peristyle stage. Carr’s silhouette will appear to illustrate the story of the Firebird as her paints transfer through the silk and illuminate the panels. This concert will integrate visual and performing arts in an innovative and unforgettable program.
