Professor Martin receives McEwen Memorial Fund

Dr. Lisa Martin, Assistant Professor of Music Education, is the recipient of this year's Merrill McEwen Memorial Fund. Dr. Merrill McEwen was the first chair of the Department of Music at BGSU. His leadership in curriculum, faculty development and university relations was crucial to the development of the new department. He was a gifted teacher, musician and administrator. As the first chair of the BGSU music department, McEwen was responsible for the nurturing of the music faculty in the early years of our existence.

The Merrill McEwen Memorial Fund celebrates the legacy of Merrill McEwen by supporting the professional activities of pre-tenure music faculty in the College of Musical Arts.

Dr. Martin will be using her funds to attend a five-day workshop on “Mindfulness in Teaching and Learning” at Indiana University Bloomington. This workshop is facilitated by Associate Professor of Music Education Dr. Frank Diaz, who also serves as co-director of the Music and Mind Lab at Jacobs School of Music. In this workshop, Dr. Marin will engage in discussion and activities related to (1) human learning and attention, (2) how to cultivate awareness in the classroom, (3) the benefits of mindful pedagogy, (4) resilience and reframing for students and teachers, and (5) working with difficult emotions in the classroom. The workshop also explores strategies for dealing with performance anxiety for teachers and students, as well as techniques for improving interpersonal interactions. Additionally, the workshop will include yoga, meditation, and mindful music making.

Congratulations to Dr. Martin!
