BGSU’s Academy Band Program Back for Another Year

The Bowling Green State University College of Musical Arts is pleased to announce that its Academy Band will be back for a second year! This outreach program was introduced last year as an extra-curricular performance opportunity designed specifically for middle school band students in Northwest Ohio. The idea was to create a high quality musical experience for band students in the area, integrating the work of BGSU’s music education majors in a mutually beneficial service learning environment.

This weekly program includes full group rehearsals, sectional instruction, and elements of comprehensive musicianship, culminating in a performance in BGSU’s own Kobacker Hall. All rehearsals, sectionals, and activities are led by music education faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students to create an engaging, individualized learning experience that supplements students’ school music instruction.

Because of its success, the Academy Band is excited to announce it will also be offered to high school students this year!

The Academy Band program complements other opportunities already offered by the CMA, such as honor bands, rehearsal clinics, and the Summer Music Institute. The fall Academy Band season will kick off at the end of September. The program is facilitated by Dr. Lisa Martin, an assistant professor of instrumental music education.
