Reading Endorsement Options

The Reading Endorsement Certificate Program provides applicants the opportunity to earn the Ohio Reading Endorsement and complete Part 1 of the M. Ed. in Reading Program. When added to an existing teaching license, program completers are prepared to teach reading from Kindergarten to grade 12. The program is designed for candidates who wish to focus on positions as reading teachers at all grade levels and with all students.

Ohio Department of Education Eligibility Guidelines

·         Applicants must have completed a baccalaureate degree and hold a current teaching license.  

·         Applicants holding the Adolescent/Young Adult (AYA), multiage, or career technical license must have completed a prerequisite nine credit hours of undergraduate level reading coursework before being admitted.

·         Applicants holding an Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, or Intervention Specialist license must have completed the prerequisite 12 semester credit hours of undergraduate level reading coursework before being admitted. 

·         Prerequisite coursework is stipulated in Ohio Revised Code 3319.24: Must include at least one separate three semester hour course in the teaching of phonics

·         Applicants who do not have the prerequisite 9-12 semester hours may take online courses from BGSU to be eligible for the endorsement coursework.

BGSU Reading Endorsement Certificate Coursework

The coursework necessary for completing reading endorsement certificate program includes 5 classes (15 semester hours of graduate credit) and can be completed either online or face-to-face.

·         EDTL 6260 Summer, Fall, Spring

·         EDTL 6200 Summer, Fall, Spring

·         EDTL 6220 Summer, Fall, Spring

·         EDTL 6280 Summer, Fall, Spring

Take the OAE Reading test (038, 039) AFTER you have completed EDTL 6280.

Admissions requirements include: 2.7 or higher undergraduate GPA, transcripts for coursework from all universities attended, and test scores from either the GRE, or a Praxis II pedagogy test, or an OAE pedagogy test.  Financial aid is available for this Certificate Program.  While not required, applicants may wish to dual enroll in the Master of Education in Reading program.  This can be done when completing the application for the Reading Endorsement Certificate Program.

The Ohio Reading Endorsement, when added to an existing teaching license, allows the candidate to teach reading across the grades from Kindergarten to grade 12. The endorsement is only available at the graduate level, taken as a graduate non-degree student.

The Ohio Department of Education also requires 100 field hours distributed across the grade spans. BGSU meets that requirement through EDTL 6220 (assessment and intervention) and EDTL 6280 (practicum).

Ohio Reading Endorsement Coursework

The coursework necessary for completing the reading endorsement program includes 5 classes (15 semester hours of graduate credit) and can be completed either online or face-to-face. Remember that you can use one undergraduate course in place of either EDTL 6260 or EDTL 6200, but make this decision with the guidance of the Graduate Reading Coordinator.

Take the OAE Reading test (038, 039) AFTER you have completed EDTL 6280.

EDTL 6220 has a 30-hour field component that involves assessing an early childhood (K-3), a middle childhood (4-9), and a secondary student (7-12). The time is figured as (a) preparing for the assessment, (b) giving the assessment, (c) scoring and interpreting the assessment, and (d) providing recommendations for future teaching based on scores. The practicum (EDTL 6280) requires 75 hours of field work providing intervention for an early childhood student (K-3), a middle childhood student (4-9), AND an AYA student (7-12). Participants are provided time for planning, assessment, and reflection time. Ideally, the same students would be used for both classes (assess in 6220 and provide intervention in 6280).

Application Process

Students who pursue the Ohio Reading Endorsement Certificate will apply for coursework as a Graduate Student. To complete this application process requires a non-degree student application.
