Older Adult Fitness Overview

Older Adult Fitness classes are free to SilverSneakers members.

Physical activity is essential to healthy aging. Engaging in regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health.  Exercise can help you:

  • Maintain and improve physical strength and ftness
  • Improve ability to do day-to-day actvities without becoming dependent on others
  • Improve balance
  • Manage and improve diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis
  • Reduce feelings of depression and may improve mood and overall well-being
  • Help prevent many age-related health problems

Older Adult Fitness Programming Registration

  • Register at the Student Recreation Center Welcome Desk prior to class start date
  • Purchase a Parking Pass (if needed) from the Student Recreation Center Welcome Desk
    $30 for Annual Pass
  • Complete a Waiver and Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PDF)
  • A medical clearance is required prior to participating only if answering "yes" to one or more questions on the PAR-Q. Consult your physician and provide the Physician Consent Form (PDF) prior to participation.

Fall 2018 Fitness Class and Activity Schedule

  • Session 1: August 27 - October 19 (No classes on September 3, Labor Day)
  • Session 2: October 22 - December 14 (No classes on November 12, Veteran's Day, and November 21 - 23, Thanksgiving Break)
  • Limited to 25 participants per class

WET: A therapeutic aquatic program designed for older adults.  WET has a positive effect on cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and joint flexibility, and is set in a social atmosphere. Classes led by Alexis.

A combination of traditional water exercises with your favorite music and upbeat moves!  Conducted in the shallow end of the pool, this is a great total body, low-impact cardiovascular workout.  Classes led by Nicole.

The higher intensity aqua class combines the benefits of interval training and dynamic exercises to build power, strength, and cardiorespiratory fitness. This aqua class increases the heart rate and challenges participants while having fun in the water. Classes led by Caroline.

A dynamic combination of muscle strengthening exercises and weight-bearing cardiovascular exercises - the two types of exercise most important for building bone density! The class also incorperates exercises to improve balance, coordination, agility, and flexibility. Classes led by Karyn.

This class combines the benefits of a low-impact dance cardio class with he high-energy and fun elements of a traditional dance class to deliver a cardiovascular and strength workout. Plus, keep your memory sharp while learning dance steps such as salsa, tango, and merengue. These weight-bearing dance cardio routines can help increase muscular strength and endurance, bone health, and cardiovascular endurance. Classes led by Adrienne.

A wonderful class catered to those who have difficulty sitting on the floor, have injuries, or are interested in a more modified practice. Class includes breathing exercises and mindful movements for stiff joint and gentle stretching for tight muscles. Classes led by Rachel.

Pickleball is a racquet sports that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. Pickleball is for drop-in participation only. Hours may vary during University break periods, holidays, and special events and are subject to chage. Paddles and balls are available for checkout at the SRC Welcome Desk.

Learn how to safely use the cardio eqiupment, strength machines, or perform basic free weight and stretching exercises. Schedule a free equipment orientation at the Student Recreation Center with a certified personal trainer.
