Martial Arts Studio

BGSU Grappling Club focuses on the fundamentals of grappling martial arts including wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and judo. Lessons provide a safe learning environment for developing effective grappling skills. We strive to offer an inclusive and welcoming environment that is conducive to growth on and off the mats. While some members choose to engage in competitive grappling contests, it is not a requirement for participation.
Classes are free of charge to all BGSU students, faculty, and staff. All skill levels are welcome.

- Friday, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Learn a blend of traditional Taekwondo as well as Olympic-style (WTF) and Hapkido. Expect a 30-minute warm-up including jumping jacks, push-ups, sit-ups, and lunges. Then a basic kick practice followed by pad work and/or forms and sparring drills. Wear comfortable clothing.
Classes are free of charge to all BGSU students, faculty, and staff. All skill levels are welcome.

Learn Taijutsu involving unarmed techniques for striking, kicking, blocking, grappling, and throwing, traditional weapon techniques, and methods of evasion and escape. Taught by BGSU Senior Chief Community and Well-Being Officer. Ages 16 and up. Wear comfortable clothing.
Classes are free of charge to all BGSU students, faculty, and staff. Beginner to advanced are welcome.

BG Gloves is a student-led organization dedicated to getting students involved and physically active through boxing. The goal is to provide a supportive environment where students can learn the fundamentals of boxing, improve their fitness, and connect with others on campus. Whether you're new to boxing or an experienced competitor, you'll find training that fosters growth and camaraderie.

Located on Lower Level II of the Student Recreation Center (formally racquetball court #3), the Martial Arts Room is a space dedicated to supporting a wide range of combat sports and training disciplines. The room is outfitted with over 700 square feet of top-of-the-line Zebra floor mats, suitable for practicing a variety of marital arts and grappling techniques. The room is also equipped with two (2) heavy bags to supplement striking skills and other training needs.
A reservation is required for the Martial Arts Studio.

- Online through the MyRec Portal if you already have an account.
- By completing an online reservation request form below.
- By contacting Julia Adams at jthatch@bgsu.edu.
Reservations are hour-long increments. Check in at the Rec Welcome Welcome Desk at your reservation time to have a staff member unlock the studio.
Make a Martial Arts Studio Reservation online through the MyRec Portal
- Select 'Log In' in the top right corner of the screen
- BGSU faculty, staff, and students select 'BGSU MYREC LOGIN' and login using BGSU credentials
- Community members who have been assigned a username and password select "Community Members" and login using the assigned credentials.
- Community members interested in using the portal who have not been assigned login credentials, complete the Rec Center Account Form to receive a username and password from a Recreation and Wellness employee.
- Select the 'Space Reservations' icon
- Select 'Martial Arts Studio'
- Select 'Book Now' next to the desired timeslot
- A reservation confirmation email is sent from recwell@recwell.bgsu.edu
Martial Arts Studio Reservation Instructions
- A reservation is required for the Martial Arts Studio. Drop-ins are not allowed.
- Registered BGSU Student Organizations and individual participants can reserve the studio by completing an online reservation request form, through the MyRec Portal, or by contacting Julia Adams via email at jthatch@bgsu.edu.
- Participants are permitted to make one reservation per day.
- Reservation requests must be submitted a minimum of one week prior to the date of the reservation.
- Participants are required to close the door at the conclusion of reservation timeslot.
- All participants must clean and return any equipment used during their session. Mats and other gear must be properly sanitized and stored after use. The studio door must be closed and locked after use.
- No shoes are allowed on the mats. Participants must either go barefoot or wear appropriate martial arts footwear. Shoes can be stored in the provided cubbies during use.
- All participants are expected to behave respectfully towards each other, the instructor, and the studio. Disruptive behavior and/or vulgar language is not tolerated.
- No food or drinks are allowed in the studio, except for water in a sealed container.
- Participants must wear appropriate martial arts uniforms or workout clothing. No loose jewelry, accessories, or other material that can puncture the mats are allowed.
- Participants must report any injuries or health issues to the Welcome Desk staff immediately.
- Internal programming offered by the Office of Recreation or Office of Health and Wellness takes priority over external reservations. If scheduling conflicts arise, the Office of Recreation will notify the group a minimum of one week prior to the reservation to notify them of the change.
- Filming and photography must be approved in advance by the Office of Recreation staff.
- Any material capable of damaging the mats, including but not limited to, markers, pens, sharp objects, and/or free weights are not permitted in this space.
Violation of Martial Arts Studio rules and regulations may result in immediate consequences, including, but not limited to, membership suspension/termination and/or referral to the Office of the Dean of Students.
