Being No. 1 in Ohio for student experience starts with you
Bowling Green State University is on a roll with enrollment up and historically high retention rates that are bucking trends in higher education in the state and across the country. Your work continues to be critical to this success as we work together to make our students feel welcome and supported while providing opportunities to excel academically and across a broad array of personally fulfilling extracurricular activities. This momentum has been acknowledged by high-profile national publications in their latest rankings. Among them, The Wall Street Journal ranked BGSU the No. 1 university in Ohio for the student experience.
This article is the first in a series exploring what is behind the high marks for the student experience from our students that has lifted BGSU above its peer institutions. We will look at specific ways faculty and staff contribute to student success and outcomes at the core of the University’s mission as a public university for the public good.
Students are responding very positively to the high level of support they experience from day one on campus. Campus Fest is a great example of students, faculty and staff coming together to share information and opportunities each fall and spring semester. The fair features 300+ student organizations, local merchants, community partners and University offices.
The University’s support network is a strategically coordinated and collaborative effort extending across all levels of the BGSU learning community, with faculty, staff, academic advisors, counselors, coaches and many others committed to redefining student success, a top priority in the University’s strategic plan, Forward.
The Wall Street Journal measured student satisfaction with the facilities available on campus, including those relating to food, housing and extracurricular activities. Game night at the Stroh Center brings the campus community together in a first-rate Division I athletics venue, providing exciting memories to last a lifetime. A large crowd packed the Stroh Center to watch Falcon Women’s Basketball take on No. 1 South Carolina.
The Campus Master Plan provides the campus community an opportunity to re-examine campus improvements every 10 to 20 years. Spearheaded by Campus Planning and Operations, the CMP process assesses and recommends improvements to academic life, sustainability, campus life, infrastructure, mobility and open space to prioritize near and long-term campus project improvements. Architecture students enjoy highly qualified faculty with national and international practice experience in state-of-the-art facilities in Kokosing Hall.
The Wall Street Journal measured a combination of diversity in terms of ethnicity, inclusion of students with lower family incomes, inclusion of students with disabilities and international diversity, all based on government data, together with the quality and frequency of opportunities to interact with students from different backgrounds. As a public university for the public good, BGSU has a bedrock commitment to diversity and belonging that requires mutual respect, understanding and valuing individuals to facilitate a more diverse and inclusive environment.
