Leadership Studies
The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program in Leadership Studies is an interdisciplinary terminal degree offered by the School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy (EFLP) in the College of Education and Human Development at Bowling Green State University. Founded in 1998, this post-master’s program is specifically designed to engage individuals in a rigorous process of inquiry, practice, and reflection. Individuals entering this program are typically individuals who hold master’s degrees in academic disciplines, have several years of successful professional/leadership experience, and are interested in preparing themselves for faculty positions in colleges or universities or leadership positions in a host of organizations including: educational settings, human resource institutions, businesses, and other public and private organizations. The primary aim of the Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies is to prepare individuals to exercise leadership that will transform the organizations they work within and thereby enable those organizations to attain specific goals and objectives as well as maintain their legitimacy within society.
Leadership Studies Core Pillars:
The curriculum, structure, students, and faculty of the Leadership Studies program are supported by the following program pillars:
1. The progression of students within the program is predicated on the movement from practice to theory and back to practice.
2. Beyond what Elmore describes as the “technical core” of education – the intersection between content, faculty, and students – the Leadership Studies program works to enhance the personal and professional relationships between students, between faculty, and between students and faculty.
3. The Leadership Studies program builds an academic experience that is inclusive and respectful of the diversity and multidisciplinary backgrounds of our students and faculty.
4. The pursuit of scholarly activities goes beyond academic pursuits in the classroom to include engaging in both individual and collaborative actions that are communicated across a broad spectrum of audiences using a host of formats.
Students in the program come from a wide variety of professional fields, including elementary and secondary education, higher education, business, law, law enforcement, government, medicine, nursing, healthcare, psychology, and social work. Although not leading specifically to administrative licensure, coursework included in the Ed.D. program may also be used to qualify individuals for a variety of Ohio school administrative licensures. The students in the Leadership Studies program enroll in cohorts, on either a three-year full-time basis, or a four-year part-time basis.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the doctoral degree, students in Leadership Studies are expected to be able to:
- Apply theoretical perspectives of leadership to influence and motivate human behavior
- Develop, expand, and communicate understandings of leadership in context of their multidisciplinary and diverse professional knowledge bases
- Be a critical consumer and producer of a variety of research, evaluation, and data relevant to leadership, organizational behavior and/or practice in their chosen field.
- Continually reflect upon, analyze, and improve leadership actions and skills to improve individual, institutional, and societal outcomes.
- Become an active member of the community of leadership scholars; contributing both individually and collaboratively.
Accreditation and/or Program/Cluster Review
Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2012 - 2013. Questions should be directed to the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.
The Leadership Studies program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and is in good standing.
Professional Licensure (If applicable)
Bowling Green State University programs leading to licensure, certification and/or endorsement, whether delivered online, face-to-face or in a blended format, satisfy the academic requirements for those credentials set forth by the State of Ohio.
Requirements for licensure, certification and/or endorsement eligibility vary greatly from one profession to another and from state to state. The Leadership Studies program does not lead to professional licensure.
Gainful Employment (If applicable)
Under the Higher Education Act Title IV disclosure requirements, an institution must provide current and prospective students with information about each of its programs that prepares students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation.
The Leadership Studies program is not a recognized occupation that requires a Gainful Employment disclosure.
