Expanding the Repertoire: Works for tuba and electronics and works by underrepresented composers

The tuba's repertoire is an ever-evolving landscape, constantly shaped by emerging compositions and shifting musical perspectives. However, the perception of what constitutes 'standard repertoire' within the tuba community has remained largely static. While the enduring value of the established pieces is indisputable, the lack of diversity in the repertoire placed in front of students does not accurately represent the world in which they live.

This presentation addresses the need to broaden the tuba’s repertoire by actively seeking and promoting works written by individuals from historically underrepresented groups and those written for tuba with electronics. The idea is grounded in the belief that a well-rounded musical education should reflect the diversity of human experiences. Through the intentional effort to diversify the standard repertoire, this presentation aims to challenge the traditional canon and encourage the exploration of music that authentically represents the diverse perspectives of society.

Christian Bush is a recent graduate from Texas Tech University where he received an MMA in Tuba Performance, studying with Dr. Kevin Wass. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Christian completed his undergraduate studies in Music Education right here at Bowling Green State University in 2021, studying with Professor David Saltzman. Christian is excited to be presenting research on tuba and electronics at his alma mater and hopes to encourage more diversity in the tuba repertoire.

Kirsten Rivera (she/her) resides in Lubbock, TX where she is currently working on her DMA in Wind Band Conducting at Texas Tech University. At TTU, she assists in all facets of the band program including conducting all four major ensembles and working with the Goin’ Band from Raiderland and the Court Jesters Pep Band. Her research interests include how we teach musicality to our students and expanding the repertoire for upper high school and university low brass players.

Kirsten has arranged for, conducted, and played with multiple groups including the University of Kansas, University of Central Florida, and Texas Tech University Tuba Euphonium Ensembles. She currently teaches privately both in person and online.

Kirsten holds a BME with a minor in tuba performance from the University of Kansas and an MA in Music with an emphasis in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Central Florida.
