Any Music Major

Applicants for the following scholarships must be a music major, have an established BGSU GPA, currently be enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 hours) at BGSU, and be enrolled full-time for the upcoming academic year. The number and amounts are subject to change without notice. You must be enrolled for both fall and spring of the next academic year to be eligible for these awards.

The College of Musical Arts is proud to provide scholarship support for students. These scholarships are provided through the generosity of alumni and friends of BGSU. Awarding of the scholarships is based on a competitive process. The amount awarded reflects the wishes of the donor(s) and is dependent upon current and projected market conditions. Some scholarships will be awarded at the full amount designated by the donor, and some scholarships may not be awarded at all due to current financial conditions.

Bernice R. Shanklin Music Scholarship

Bernice R. Shanklin established this scholarship in 2002. Bernice’s love for music, particularly jazz, inspired her to establish this scholarship.

Criteria

  • be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the College of Musical Arts
  • preference will be given to a saxophonist majoring in jazz, then jazz major and then any other student
  • have a minimum 2.7 GPA
  • financial need will be a consideration—must have a current FAFSA on file through the Financial Aid Office.
  • involvement in extracurricular activities will be a consideration, but is not a requirement

Heidi Fern Clausius Master’s in Music Scholarship

This scholarship fund was created by the family to honor the achievements of Heidi Fern Clausius, 2012 graduate with a master’s degree in Collaborative Piano. After a 25-year career in real estate, Heidi Fern Clausius pursued her dream of obtaining her master’s degree from BGSU.

Criteria

  • An undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree within the College of Musical Arts.
  • A Non-Traditional student, defined as someone who has met, struggled, and fought with obstacles to get back in school (such as family or career changes, personal/emotional trauma, etc.).
  • Strong preference should be given to working or stay-at-home parents.

Paul F. and Thelma I. Leedy Scholarship (one award)

Dr. Paul Leedy served BGSU as a professor in the English department, director of the library and as provost. His wife, Thelma, was also very supportive of the University. The award is given on a rotating basis every five years. Music—2003, 2008, 2013.

  • rising senior

Presser Scholarship (one award)

The Presser Foundation annually makes scholarship grants to colleges and universities in the United States that provide courses in music study primarily for students who are preparing to become teachers of music.

Criteria

  • be an outstanding music major who has completed his/her junior year
  • be a full-time undergraduate student
  • have a minimum 3.5 GPA
  • at least one third of the recipient’s subjects must be academic subjects

Pro Musica Graduate and Undergraduate Music Scholarships

The Pro Musica Board is offering a scholarship to anyone with high scholarly and musical achievement.

Criteria

  • be a continuing full-time resident student
  • have a minimum GPA of 3.75 for undergraduates and a 3.8 for graduates
  • show service or leadership to the College of Musical Arts community or community at large as described in an essay of no more than 600 words

Dr. Richard Kennell Music Scholarship

The Dr. Richard Kennell Music Scholarship was created by money provided by friends, colleagues, alumni and donors to honor Dr. Richard Kennell to celebrate his retirement as dean of the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University in 2011. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a student in the College of Musical Arts.

Criteria

  • Be a rising sophomore, junior and senior music major
  • Demonstrate satisfactory progress toward his or her degree
  • Write and submit an essay between 700 and 1,000 words describing the influence and positive impact of a music teacher in his or her life, whether the teacher be a grade school or high school teacher, a choir leader from a place of worship, or a BGSU faculty member; and
  • indicate whether or not he or she will allow his or her scholarship essay to be shared with the teacher.

Robert and Leona Fellers Scholarship

The Robert and Leona Fellers Scholarship was created through a generous gift given by Robert and Leona Fellers. Mr. Fellers received his undergraduate degree from BGSU’s College of Business Administration in 1950. While a student, he was active in the Sigma Chi fraternity. The family legacy continued with his daughter Debra graduating in 1977 and his granddaughter graduating in 2003.

Criteria

  • be a full-time rising sophomore, junior or senior in the College of Musical Arts at BGSU
  • have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • preference will be given to students who have demonstrated financial need—must have a current FAFSA on file through the Financial Aid Office.
  • be involved in extracurricular or community organizations in either Muskingum County or while a student at BGSU
  • preference should be given to a student maintaining residence in Muskingham County
