THE LAKE
"The Lake" is inspired by this pond/mini lake outside the Moore Musical Arts Center at BGSU. The piece begins with various birds singing in conversation with each other, extended techniques mimicking the sounds of the blowing wind and the sounds of the cicada I would often hear when walking out of the building during the first month and a half of living at BG. I then introduce a new melody, the lake theme, characterized by its calm and serene quality, representing the flowing water. The bird themes then return, this time faster, and louder, along with the wind now represented as fast chromatic runs. Finally, the lake theme returns but now as a flowing caricature of the fountain in the middle of the lake, arpeggios outlining the chord progression of the melody. The melody is now tied in with the bird songs, interrupting the flow of the music to weigh in with their two cents. The piece ends in a final trill that fades into silence.
BLACK SUNDAY
"Black Sunday" is a work for solo flute that depicts the worst storm during the Dust Bowl. This piece contrasts a lyrical melody with fast extended techniques to represent the storm that struck the Great Plains on April 14, 1935, before returning to a lyrical style in the wake of the destruction.
SHADOWS IN THE MOONLIGHT
"Shadows in the Moonlight" depicts a foggy, moonlit pond. Many people come to visit this desolate place, but little do they know .... something lurks beneath the shadows.
WAR IS KIND
War is evil. War is tragic. War is unnatural. The two texts chosen are from centuries apart, yet they both tell a story about civil war. One would think history can teach the present about the mistakes from the past, yet war is as relevant as ever.
TIME CRYSTALS
Time Crystals refers to the concept in quantum mechanics by the same name. Time crystals are highly organized structures that vibrate at constant frequencies. This piece utilizes steady repeating patterns to emulate the “tick” of the time crystal. The mysterious atmosphere of the piece, like quantum mechanics, seem otherworldly but are from this world.
TAPE MUSIC
A deliberate shift from the default referent to another member of the same superordinate category
