Das Jahr Texts and Translations

Texts drawn from poetry by Uhland, Goethe, Schiller, Eichendorff, and Tieck

January: A Dream

Adagio, quasi una Fantasia

Ahnest du, o Seele wieder
Sanfte, süße Frühlingslieder?
Sieh umher die falben Bäume.
Ach! es waren holde Träume.

Do you sense again, O soul,
Gentle, sweet spring songs?
Look around at the pale trees.
Ah! they were lovely dreams.
~Ludwig Uhland, Im Herbste (In Autumn)

February: Scherzo

Presto

Denkt nicht ihr seyd in deutschen Gränzen,
Von Teufels-Narren-und Todtentänzen
Ein heiter Fest erwartet Euch

Do not think you are within German borders;
A merry festival awaits you
Of dances of devils, fools, and the dead.
 ~ Goethe, Faust

March: Prelude and Chorale

Verkündiget ihr dumpfen Glocken schon
Des Osterfestes erste Feyerstunde?

Are you already proclaiming, you muffled bells,
the first festive hour of the Easter feast?
 ~Goethe, Faust

April: Capriccioso

Allegretto

Der Sonnenblick betrüget
Mit mildem, falschem Schein.

The sun's ray deceives
With a mild, false shine
 ~Goethe, Faust

May: Spring Song

Allegro vivace e gioioso

Nun blüht das fernste, tiefste Thal.

Now the most distant, deepest valley blooms.
~Ludwig Uhland, Frühlingsglaube (Faith in Spring)

June: Serenade

Allegro

Hör’ ich Rauschen, hör’ ich Lieder
Hör’ ich holde Liebesklage?

Do I hear rustling, do I hear singing,
Do I hear sweet laments of love?
 ~Goethe, Faust

July

Larghetto

—Die Fluren dürsten
Nach erquickendem Thau,
der Mensch verschmachtet

The fields thirst
for refreshing dew,
and man languishes.
~Friedrich von Schiller, Der Abend (The Evening)

August

Allegro – Marcia pastorale – Allegro assai

Bunt von Farben
auf den Garben
Liegt der Kranz.

Bright with colors
on the sheaves
lies the wreath.
~Friedrich von Schiller, Das Lied von der Glocke (Song of the Bell)

September: By the River

Andante con moto

Fliesse, fliesse, lieber Fluß
Nimmer werd ich froh.

Flow, flow, dear river —
Nevermore will I be happy again.
~Goethe, An den Mond (To the Moon)

October

Allegro con spirito

Im Wald, im grünen Walde
Da ist ein lustiger Schall.

In the woods, in the green forest,
there is a merry sound.
~Joseph von Eichendorff, Die Spielleute (The Minstrels)

November

Mesto

Wie rauschen die Bäume so winterlich schon
Es fliehen die Träume des Lebens davon
Ein Klagelied schallt
Durch Hügel und Wald.

The trees are rustling, so wintry already.
The dreams of life are fleeing away.
A song of lament echoes
through hill and forest.
 ~Ludwig Tieck, Trauer (Grief)

December

Allegro molto

Vom Himmel hoch,
da komm ich her.

From heaven above
to earth I come.
 ~Martin Luther (Christmas hymn text)

Epilogue: Chorale

Das alte Jahr vergangen ist.

The old year now hath passed away.
 ~Johann Steurlein (Hymn text)
