Mr. Michael D. Slates earned his J.D. and MBA from Northern Illinois University. Mr. Slates is also a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charter holder. Prior to joining the University in 2002, Mr. Slates served as an associate attorney in Northwest Illinois. In private practice, Mr. Slates specialized in corporate law and transactions, estate planning and health care law. After leaving private practice, Mr. Slates joined a large regional bank as a Vice President in the Office of the General Counsel. Mr. Slates spent several years in the General Counsel’s office before becoming a commercial banker in the same institution. Mr. Slates left the bank to become the Chief Financial Officer for a small public manufacturing firm in Northwest Ohio.

Mr. Slates has taught a number of different courses in the Schmidthorst College of Business, both in the Department of Finance and in the Department of Legal Studies. In the Department of Finance, Mr. Slates has taught courses in Business Finance, Corporate Finance, Personal Finance, Pension and Retirement and Employee Benefits and Risk Management and Insurance. In the Department of Legal Studies, Mr. Slates has taught courses in the Legal Environment of Business, Health Care Law and International Business Transactions.

Mr. Slates has published in the Real Estate Law Journal and has research interests in Financial Markets and Real Estate Law.

  • Managed a $10 million portfolio of troubled corporate loans. Rehabilitated or collected more than $7 million of that total for the benefit of the bank.
  • Under my direction, the Special Assets Unit also managed the bank's Other Real Estate Owned portfolio. Personally handled the liquidation of more than 15 commercial and residential properties.

Practice consisted of estate planning, commercial, secured and corporate transactions, general corporate law with emphasis in corporate health care, and software licensing, sublicensing and marketing.

  • Represented the city’s largest hospital in numerous acquisitions and joint venture transactions.
  • Argued numerous cases in front of state and Federal courts, including a successful appeal in one of the first cases heard by the Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal under the 1988 amendments to the Federal Fair Housing Act.
