Students Learned About Insurance Career Opportunities at Symposium

A record number of students and faculty attended the 5th Annual Insurance and Risk Management Institute Symposium, hosted by the Department of Finance through the Insurance and Risk Management specialization. The theme was “Launching Insurance and Risk Management Careers.”

Heather Lee Allred (JD, MPH), Vice President of Risk Management and Insurance at ProMedica, was the keynote speaker. Allred offered advice regarding career choices, discussed insurance and risk management challenges and shared her overall perspective on careers and opportunities in the risk management profession.

The symposium included a recent alumni panel consisting of the following:

  • Elizabeth Howard, Hylant Group
  • Jessica Mecklenburg, Aston Carter
  • Kyle Lamb, Safe Auto
  • Hannah Decker, Key Bank
  • Gabrielle Yarbrough,Westfield
  • Philip Zitko, Medical Mutual  

Each young alum discussed their insurance and risk studies while undergraduates at BGSU, as well as the opportunities, challenges and their respective career paths going forward after graduation.

Following the symposium, there was a scholarship recognition dinner and a review of the recent Gamma Iota Sigma officers’ trip to the International Conference in Dallas, TX.
