Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is framework for instructional design and delivery through which evidence-based practices are implemented in order to increase access and reduce barriers to learning for students with diverse learning needs, including, but not limited to, students with disabilities, English language learners, and those from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds (Israel, Ribuffo, & Smith, 2014). Project IMPACT seeks to improve consideration of UDL principles during the lesson planning phase. Research has shown that teacher candidates can improve their ability to lesson plan with principles of UDL (Courey, Tappe, Siker, & LePage, 2012; Spooner et al., 2007); therefore, Project IMPACT will develop curricula to improve teacher candidates' understanding of UDL framework.
