Cross-Cultural & International Education (CCIE) offers both a Master of Arts degree and Graduate Certificate!

The Master of Arts in Cross-Cultural and International Education (MACIE) is an academic, research-oriented graduate program in the School of Counseling, Higher Education, Leadership, and Foundations (SCHELF) at Bowling Green State University.

The MACIE program offers students rigorous coursework with opportunities for collaborative community service within an academically oriented internship. We prepare our graduates to be effective leaders in cross-cultural and international education arenas. Our vibrant curriculum includes: a core understanding of educational foundations from a cultural perspective; research methodologies, and an interdisciplinary cognate.  Our students examine educational issues from diverse perspectives in intercultural, international, and global contexts.

The program connects cultural and international understanding with educational theory and practice through a unique combination of courses from several disciplines at BGSU. Beyond the core courses, students construct the academic basis for their program from select courses in the College of Education and Human Development and other colleges on campus. The students then apply this academic foundation to a practical cross-cultural/international internship experience. Students have participated in a variety of internships in formal and non-formal settings, including international sites in China, South Africa, Vietnam, Chile, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Belize, and domestically with Yup'ik students in Alaska, refugee organizations in Colorado, Washington and Texas, and Mexican migrant populations in Ohio, Michigan Washington and other states. Students complete the MACIE program with either a comprehensive examination, applied project, or a master’s thesis.

The CCIE graduate certificate takes as its focus the core elements of the CCIE curriculum.  Graduate students may want to specialize in understanding education from a cross-cultural and international education by taking the four courses (12 credits) associated with the MACIE core.  Interested students may do the four courses as a stand-alone certificate or tack it on to master’s or doctoral degree as a cognate/specialization in their program.   

Students cannot be offered any financial aid or Graduate Assistant funding for the certificate.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the graduate degree, students in Cross-Cultural and International Education are expected to be able to:

• Demonstrate the skills necessary for international/cross-cultural educational research. 
• Relate academic learning to authentic problems and apply conceptually based models to real-life settings and challenges. 
• Research and analyze issues of cultural and international understanding with educational theory and practice in local, national or international settings. 
• Construct conceptual models of the relationship between education and global challenges/problems.

Accreditation and/or Program/Cluster Review

Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.  BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2012 - 2013. Questions should be directed to the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

Professional Licensure (If applicable)

Bowling Green State University programs leading to licensure, certification and/or endorsement, whether delivered online, face-to-face or in a blended format, satisfy the academic requirements for those credentials set forth by the State of Ohio.

Requirements for licensure, certification and/or endorsement eligibility vary greatly from one profession to another and from state to state. The Cross-Cultural and International Education program does not lead to professional licensure.

Gainful Employment (If applicable)     

Under the Higher Education Act Title IV disclosure requirements, an institution must provide current and prospective students with information about each of its programs that prepares students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation.

The Cross-Cultural and International Education program is not a recognized occupation that requires a Gainful Employment disclosure.
