Schmidthorst College of Business students recently had the unique opportunity to learn from two accomplished leaders, Rear Admiral June Ryan and former CEO of The Andersons Pat Bowes. These visits reflect the college’s commitment to experiential learning and preparing students for leadership roles in a global business environment.

Pat Bowe, former CEO of The Andersons and current member of its Board of Directors, served as Executive in Residence from November 10–14. Throughout the week, Bowes visited multiple classes including Global Strategy, Ethics and Social Responsibility, Integrated Business Experience and Understanding Dynamics of Business. He shared real-world insights on leadership, strategic decision-making and career development, drawing from his journey from humble beginnings to leading a major corporation.

“Pat’s visit was perfectly aligned with what we were covering in class,” said Professor Miguel Alvarez. “He reinforced that leadership is not just about strategy—it’s about character, humility and perseverance.” Students were particularly inspired by his reflections on balancing professional and personal life and the role of family in his success.

Rear Admiral June Ryan visited campus November 21–22, speaking to students in Global Strategy and Leading for Success. Her leadership insights aligned perfectly with the topics being covered in class. Known for her authentic and approachable style, Ryan shared personal challenges and stories that demonstrated leadership is not only about achievement but also about character and resilience.

“She is a very positive and inspiring person,” said Ella Wlodarsky, a senior specializing in Insurance and Risk Management and Business Analytics and Intelligence. “Her journey resonated with me the most—she faced many challenges and had the resilience to get through them while staying positive. She reminded me how important it is to not lose your voice even if you aren’t in a leadership role.” Ryan’s message of perseverance and intentionality encouraged students to think deeply about their own professional development and the qualities that define effective leadership.
