Schmidthorst College of Business and Paul J. Hooker Center shine during Global Entrepreneurship Week

The Schmidthorst College of Business and the Paul J. Hooker Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership wrapped up a dynamic Global Entrepreneurship Week in November. 

The week-long event during National Entrepreneurship month cemented Bowling Green State University's reputation as a hub for fostering innovation and nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit. It showcased the University's commitment to equip students with the skills and insights needed to thrive in the ever-evolving business landscape. 

Orel Hershiser's inspirational keynote 

The festivities kicked off with a riveting keynote address by Orel Hershiser, a baseball legend (and former Falcon player) turned successful entrepreneur.  

Hershiser shared study tips and life lessons with a diverse audience of students, faculty, staff and community members. He talked about his experiences in major league baseball, his leadership journey and his path to becoming a part owner of various companies. His authentic conversation encouraged students to follow their passion and put their best selves forward.

InnovateU: shaping future entrepreneurs 

Entrepreneurship Week continued with InnovateU, an experiential learning event for high school students sponsored by the Wood County Economic Development Commission.  

Students from four regional high schools engaged in entrepreneurial activities that highlighted their creativity and problem-solving skills. The day also featured a panel discussion with current BGSU students sharing their campus experiences and a tour of the Maurer Center.

Holiday Fair showcases student entrepreneurs 

The Maurer Center buzzed with energy as 24 student entrepreneurs showcased their ventures to faculty, staff and community members at the Holiday Fair. The event was organized by the student entrepreneurship club, BGSUces, and sponsored by the Paul J. Hooker Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. The fair allowed students to exhibit their entrepreneurial prowess, showcase their side hustles and network with other entrepreneurs.

Empowering Women Entrepreneurs panel discussion 

A group of distinguished women business leaders gathered for a panel discussion in celebration of Women's Entrepreneurship Day on the last day of Global Entrepreneurship Week. 

The panel included: 

  • Sara Best – principal and co-founder, real.good.ventures 
  • Noor Abukaram – founder, Let Noor Run 
  • Erin Curley – CEO and architect, Engage Studio Architects 
  • Aly Sterling – president, Aly Sterling Philanthropy 
  • Kati Thompson – owner, Eden Fashion Boutique, and executive director, Bowling Green Economic Development 

The panelists’ insights and experiences inspired and empowered the audience. The luncheon featured table discussions, raffles of baskets donated by each panelist and giveaways of Sterling's book, "37: The Year I Stopped Making Excuses, Embraced My Power, and Launched My Million-Dollar Business."
