Twenty BGSU and OSU graduate students attended the 13th Annual OSU/BGSU Student Conference on Population, Friday, November 1st at The Ohio State University. We wish to thank our presenters and all of those who attended the conference and supported our students. We will be home to the conference in 2020, which is co-sponsored by the Center for Family and Demographic Research at Bowling Green State University and the Institute for Population Research at The Ohio State University

Students and faculty donate to Project Connect Wood County

A team of students and faculty gathered to help assemble care kits to aid Project Connect Wood County. Many generous donations allowed the department to contribute 150 care kits that were distributed during the event mid-October -- over 100 more than last year! This year, 50 women, 50 men, and 50 children experiencing or at risk of homelessness received a care kit replete with everyday essentials. Way to go!

Andrea Krieg receives prestigious "10 Under 10" honor

BGSU alumna Dr. Andrea Krieg ('12 and '15) received the "10 Under 10" award, which was created to honor the accomplishments of recent alumni. Andrea is currently an assistant professor of criminal justice at Elmhurst College in Illinois and a member of the BGSU Recent Alumni Council. Additionally, she is active in the Chicago regional network and has served as a BGSU One Day ambassador. Congratulations, Dr. Krieg! Read more about 10 under 10.

Seven graduate students received diplomas during summer ceremony

Paul Hemez wins Adamchak Award

We are pleased to announce that Paul Hemez is this year’s winner of the Adamchak Award. Established by Donald and Susan Adamchak (both who earned graduate degrees in sociology from BGSU), the award recognizes a graduate student's research excellence in demography. Paul will continue working with the Center for Family and Demographic Research on the Bowling Green State University campus during the summer months. Congratulations, Paul!

Kyle Bares wins Shanklin Research Excellence Award

Congratulations to Kyles Bares who was awarded with the Shanklin Research Excellence Award at the 10th annual Charles E. Shanklin Colloquium on April 18, 2019. The colloquium is a graduate student research conference, highlighting the significant research and efforts of graduate students at BGSU. Kyle won this award for his paper and research with Tom Mowen on the role of parole officers as sources of support during the reentry process.

In addition to Kyle, many other students were recognized, including: Vanessa Lang who was nominated for the Outstanding Research Assistant I award; Paul Hemez who was nominated for the Distinguished Thesis Award. Chris Dennison who won last year's Distinguished Dissertation Award; Cori Pryor for presenting a poster during the Shanklin Colloquium; Eric Sevareid for serving as a poster judge; and thank you to Brian Timm for his tireless and expert work as a key organizer of all of the days festivities. It was a fantastic event!

Congratulations to graduate student Elizabeth Woods who is serving as managing editor of Population Research and Policy Review (PRPR), the flagship journal of Southern Demographic Association (SDA). Professor Kara Joyner is serving a three-year term as Co-Editor.

Marta Alvira-Hammond discusses declining birth rate with KJZZ radio

BGSU sociology alum Marta Alvira-Hammond, senior research analyst, Child Trends, recently spoke with KJZZ radio on the sharp decline in Hispanic birthrates. Alvira-Hammond found that a combination of factors most likely contributed to the decrease.

Congratulations to Brian Timm, the "People's Choice"

Doctoral student Brian Timm was recently named "People's Choice" at the inaugural "Three-Minute Thesis" competition, which was held on the Bowling Green State University campus. Brian received a cash prize for his presentation "The Long Reach of Delinquent Networks in Late Adolescence on Criminal Activity in Early Adulthood." Congratulations, Brian!
