The BGSU Advantage: By the Numbers

We prioritize your transition from student to professional leader. Our small, focused scale ensures you never get lost in the crowd.

  • Elite Placement: Over 90% of graduates placed in industry or faculty roles within 6 months of defense.
  • Efficient Success: 4.5-5.5 years (median 5 years) time to degree.
  • Targeted Cohorts: We admit only 8–12 students per year, ensuring individualized mentorship and direct, daily access to world-renowned faculty and facilities.
  • Global Exclusivity: The only Ph.D. of its kind in the world.

High-Impact Research & Career Outcomes

Master light-matter interactions at the intersection of Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. Our graduates are the preferred candidates for the world's most influential organizations:

  • Industry Leaders: Intel, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, Sherwin-Williams, First Solar, Genentech, General Electrics (GE), PPG, Glaxo-Smith-Kline, The FBI and NIH.
  • National Labs: High-level NASA collaborations, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, along with other federal research facilities.
  • Elite Academia: Tenure-track faculty and postdoctoral placements at top-tier universities worldwide.

World-Class Training & Facilities

Bridge the gap between fundamental discovery and real-world technology. Train in state-of-the-art labs equipped with over $20 million in specialized instrumentation, including:

  • Ultrafast Laser Systems: Tracking chemical reactions in real-time (femtosecond to millisecond resolution).
  • Advanced Microscopy: Confocal scanning, single-molecule spectroscopic imaging, SEM/TEM, and AFM/STM platforms.
  • High-Field NMR: 500 MHz and 600 MHz systems equipped with cryoprobes for ultra-sensitive structural analysis and broadband double decoupling capabilities.
  • Other Specialized equipment: Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry with Electrospray Ionization (High Resolution), MALDI-TOF (High Resolution) mass spectrometry and Bruker X-ray diffractometers.

A Supportive, Student-Centered Community

The Center is a deliberately close-knit community—small cohorts, engaged faculty, and a culture that treats graduate students as colleagues.

  • GSPDA: Join the Graduate Student Photochemical Development Association for peer mentorship and professional networking.
  • Prestigious Fellowships: Exceptional achievement is recognized through the McMaster and Taller Fellowships.
  • Global Visibility: The Center provides professional development funds (subject to availability) for students to present at international conferences.
