Logo for Mental Health First Aid

Learn how to recognize, understand, and respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults. Build mental health literacy and walk away with an action plan for responding safely and effectively. Blended delivery includes 2-hour self-paced pre-work, and one day in-person training.

Logo for Mental Health Champion

The Mental Health Champion Certificate recognizes faculty, staff, and students who promote mental health and well-being and foster a learning community where individuals support one another with kindness and understanding. Through the program, participants build practical skills to recognize and respond to mental health concerns and crises and navigate campus and community resources. Participants not only strengthen their ability to support others but also invest in their own holistic well-being.

Participants must complete the following: 

  • Mental Health First Aid  

  • Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training 

  • Campus Well-Being Resources Training  

  • Community Mental Health Resources Training 

  • Personal Well-Being Experience: Attend one program or activity that supports your own well-being. This may include offerings from the Office of Health and Wellness or other campus or community organizations.  

Participants will be able to:  

  • Analyze scenarios to identify signs, symptoms, and risk factors of mental health concerns, consistent with Mental Health First Aid and QPR frameworks.  

  • Demonstrate appropriate response strategies to mental health concerns using the action plans and intervention approaches taught in Mental Health First Aid and QPR. 

  • Select and recommend appropriate campus and community mental health and well-being resources based on presented needs and situations.  

  • Implement at least one evidence-informed well-being strategy to support personal well-being. 

Certificate recipients will be celebrated at a Spring semester recognition reception honoring their commitment to mental health and well-being at BGSU. Participants who complete all requirements will receive a certificate, digital email badge, and graduation cords, symbolizing their role as Mental Health Champions and their contribution to a thriving, supportive campus community.

If you are struggling with your mental health, contact the Counseling Center. An on-call counselor available at 419-372-2081 for crisis situations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. You can also utilize the Wood County Crisis Line at 419-502-4673 after Counseling Center business hours. Wood County Crisis Line is a 24 hours, 7 days a week crisis resource for folks in Wood County. Crisis Text Line-Text HOME to 741741 for a crisis counselor or text STEVE to 741741 for a culturally competent crisis counselor. You can also text or dial 988 to be connected to a crisis counselor 24/7.
