Lisa M. Gruenhagen, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Music Education and Area Coordinator of General Music at Bowling Green State University. At BGSU, she has served as Interim Chair of Music Education and Program Coordinator of the MM Teaching Artistry Degree. Prior to her appointment at BGSU, Dr. Gruenhagen was on the faculty at Hartwick College, Nazareth College, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Gruenhagen served as Instructor in Music Teaching and Learning at the Eastman School of Music where she was also the Coordinator for the MusicTIME Early Childhood Music Program in the Eastman Community Music School. Dr. Gruenhagen served as Director of the Early Childhood and Elementary Music Program at the Levine School of Music where she managed programs for children at Levine’s campuses in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and at nine outreach programs across the metropolitan area. Dr. Gruenhagen co-wrote and served as program manager for numerous corporate and privately funded grants that supported these programs and provided professional development for teachers and administrators. She also served as an instructor and researcher for these programs. As a Coach for WIDE World (Wide-scale Interactive Development for Educators) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Dr. Gruenhagen worked with educators and administrators from around the world who were enrolled in Teaching for Understanding courses and served as faculty member in the Project Zero Summer Institute where she facilitated study groups and taught mini courses on learning in and through the arts. Dr. Gruenhagen earned her Ph.D. and Master of Music in Music Education and Flute from the Eastman School of Music and her Bachelor of Music in Flute from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver.
Since 2016, Dr. Gruenhagen has served as consultant for program evaluation and professional development for Toledo Opera’s Arts Residency Program, An Opera is a Story. As an active clinician, Dr. Gruenhagen presents sessions at state and national teacher in-service conferences and at professional development workshops for area school districts. Her research focuses on fostering children’s musical understanding through creative and reflective practices, teacher action research in schools, and professional development. Dr. Gruenhagen has presented her research at state, national, and international conferences, and is published in Perspectives: Journal of the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association, School Music News (NYSSMA), TRIAD (OMEA), ArkMEAJournal, The Colorado Music Educator, Southwestern Musician, Music Educators Journal, Advances in Music Education Research, Research Studies in Music, and The Journal of Research in Music Education. She currently serves on the Partnerships for Higher Education Working Group for the Arts Education Partnership (AEP), a national network of organizations dedicated to advancing arts education.
