BGSU High School Honors String Festival

Orchestra

The 2018 BGSU High School Honors String Festival will be on Saturday, September 22 from 12:30 to about 9:30 p.m. We welcome intermediate to advanced string players who are eager to develop their talent & musicianship.

This year’s festival will feature guest music educator, composer and arranger, Doug Eyink, in a session called: Introduction to Alternative String Techniques. The main attraction will be the opportunity to rehearse and perform along the BG Philharmonia in Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

Interested students should consult with their parents and, either their High School Orchestra Directors, or Private Teachers when filling out the Registration Form.

Guest Artist and Instructor

Douglas Eyink, President and founder of the School Of Strings is also director of several orchestras in the Centerville City Schools. Doug grew up playing folk and bluegrass music while studying classical cello. His passion for folk, bluegrass and jazz led to the creation of the Alternative Strings Program. For the past 20 years Doug has successfully incorporated these styles of music into his teaching, writing and performing. His Alternative Strings have shared the stage with many of the top performers in the bluegrass industry including: Cherryholmes, Nothin’ Fancy, Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, Special Consensus, Sierra Hull & Highway 101, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers. Alternative Strings collaboration with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver can be heard on IBMA’s recorded event of the year, “Life Goes On.”

Mingwei Zhao, cello soloist and teacher and BGSU alumni.

Doug Eyink, music educator, composer and arranger, founder of Alternative Strings and The School of Strings, teaches at Centerville City Schools.

Repertoire:

Elgar Enigma Variations and Cello Concerto. Participants will perform along side the BGPhilharmonia in selected movements. **See note below. Music is available to download on the registration and forms tab.

5:00 Dinner at University cafeteria, Carillon Place
6:00-6:30 Yoga Stretch-Out Session
6:30 Change into Concert Dress
6:45-7:30 Run-through with BGSU Philharmonia

8PM – Grand Finale Concert.
Tickets will be provided for family of all High School participants. Program: Edward Elgar Enigma Variations and Concerto for Cello, Mingwei Zhao, soloist; Emily Freeman Brown, conductor.
