Business Students Explore Global Innovation in Austria and Spain
This summer, students expanded their global perspectives through two immersive study abroad programs in Salzburg, Austria, and Barcelona, Spain. Led by faculty members Earl McKinney, Michael Good, Man Zhang, and Jan Hartley, these experiences offered a powerful blend of academic rigor, cultural exploration, and real-world business engagement.
In Salzburg, students explored the role of technology in small business operations through a hands-on visit to The Salt Mine, a local tourism enterprise known for its innovative use of digital tools in marketing and strategy. The program challenged students to compare business practices between Austria and the U.S., evaluate tech effectiveness across cultures, and develop strategic proposals tailored to global small businesses. Field trips, guest speakers, and collaborative presentations reinforced key learning outcomes while supporting AACSB competencies in global perspectives, industry engagement, and teamwork.
In Barcelona, students participated in the Global Entrepreneurship and Social Impact course, co-developed with Geneva Business School. Over two weeks, students attended seminars on entrepreneurial thinking, met with global business leaders, and explored how innovation can drive both economic growth and social change. Cultural immersion was a key component, with guided tours and independent exploration of historic sites such as the Gothic Quarter and Sagrada Familia. The program culminated in team presentations of original business ventures, showcasing creativity, market insight, and a strong grasp of entrepreneurship principles.
Katie Schmitz reflected on the experience:
“To think that I had an immersive experience in the culture, a flip in my academic mindset, expanded my knowledge of entrepreneurship, and grew personally is what made this trip so valuable. Entrepreneurship expands past innovative ideas; it represents risk, failure, opportunity, and personal growth.”
Both programs exemplify the college’s commitment to experiential learning and global engagement. Students returned with new perspectives, practical skills, and a deeper understanding of how business operates across borders preparing them to lead with innovation and impact in a globalized world.
