Music Performance

Applicants for the following scholarships must be a music major, have an established BGSU GPA, currently be enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 hours) at BGSU, and be enrolled full-time for the upcoming academic year. The number and amounts are subject to change without notice. You must be enrolled for both fall and spring of the next academic year to be eligible for these awards.

The College of Musical Arts is proud to provide scholarship support for students. These scholarships are provided through the generosity of alumni and friends of BGSU. Awarding of the scholarships is based on a competitive process. The amount awarded reflects the wishes of the donor(s) and is dependent upon current and projected market conditions. Some scholarships will be awarded at the full amount designated by the donor, and some scholarships may not be awarded at all due to current financial conditions.

E. Printy Arthur Jazz Studies Award

This award was created because of Mr. Arthur’s lifelong love of jazz and to assist the students of the University’s exceptional jazz studies program.

Criteria

• be a full-time graduate or undergraduate student specializing in jazz studies
• have a minimum 3.0 GPA

Dr. Barbara Allyen Lockard-Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Barbara Allyen Lockard-Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship was established in recognition of the life of Dr. Barbara Allyen Lockard-Zimmerman. The hope is to provide funding for a qualified voice performance or a music education major within the College of Musical Arts that demonstrate a caring attitude toward fellow students and is a team player within the Opera workshop or a choir.

Criteria

• Be a rising Freshman, sophomore or junior enrolled in the College of Musical Arts
• Be a voice performance or music education major
• Be in good standing with the College and have a minimum GPA of 2.5
• Be involved with Opera work shop and/or a member of a choir
• Demonstrate a caring attitude toward fellow students

Bob Sebo Endowed Jazz Studies Scholarship

J. Robert Sebo established the Bob Sebo Jazz Studies Scholarship in 2003 to reflect his interest in jazz and the College of Musical Arts. Bob graduated from BGSU in 1958. He funded this scholarship while he served on the University Board of Trustees.

Criteria

• this scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the College of Musical Arts
• have a minimum 2.5 GPA
• preference will be given to a student according to the following order
  • jazz major
  • any BGSU student active in the jazz program
• preference will be given to students who have demonstrated financial need - must have a current FAFSA on file through the Financial Aid Office. 

The Bushong Trumpet Scholarship ($1,000)

Brian Bushong and Sara (Ezzone) Bushong met as freshmen music majors at BGSU. Both were trumpet students majoring in music education. Both feel that music and performing have a positive life-long presence in their lives. The music program at BGSU was an important force in Brian and Sara’s education, and that of both their parents.

Criteria

• be an undergraduate or graduate trumpet student in the College of Musical Arts
• preference will be given in the following order:
  1. student should have demonstrate strong performance improvement and hard work during the previous year.
  2. student should have demonstrated strong academic improvement and hard work during their previous year.
• financial need may be a consideration but is not is not a requirement
• student must have at least a 2.7 GPA

C. Elizabeth Cobb Memorial Scholarship

This award was established for rising sophomore, junior and senior students in the College of Musical Arts who are piano majors in music education or piano performance degree programs.

Criteria

• Strong preference will be made towards those recipients who display exceptional promise in the area of collaborative piano studies

Cathy McCambridge Memorial Scholarship (one award)

Ms. McCambridge was a BGSU student who died in a tragic accident during her freshman year. Because of Cathy’s personal and professional expertise, her many friends established a memorial scholarship as a tribute to her and as a token of respect for her father and mother.

Criteria

• be a full-time undergraduate student
• be a rising sophomore, junior or senior
• have a minimum 3.0 GPA
• preferably be a Fostoria-area resident
• preference will be given to voice or piano majors

David "Dak" Melle Jazz Fund

Students must:

• Demonstrate performance ability of the highest quality in jazz and future promise in jazz;
• Participate in the jazz lab band and make a commitment to continue to participate;
• Be a rising senior in good academic standing who need NOT be a music major; and
• Describe how the award would be spent when applying through the College of Musical Arts

Preference will given to students participating in multiple jazz ensembles who demonstrate aptitude in performance, composition and arranging in the jazz genre. Financial need should only be considered in the event of a tie.

Edwin R. and Karolynn Betts Performance Award (one award)

This award is designed to recognize outstanding ability in the performance arena. Mr. Betts was a professor of trumpet at BGSU, where he co-founded the BGSU Brass Quintet. This award was established in 1998 through the many generous donations of students and friends and a benefit concert presented by Chuck Mangione—“Ted’s” long-time friend, colleague and former student at the Eastman School of Music.

Criteria

• be full-time undergraduate student in brass area with preference given to trumpet
• be a rising junior or senior
• have a minimum 3.0 GPA
• exhibit exceptional skill and technique as a musical performer
• demonstrate involvement with performance activities in the college, the University, the community or the profession

Herb Spencer Horn Students Fund

This award was established by Karol Spencer to honor her beloved husband and best friend, as a legacy gift to horn students. The purpose is to provide an annual award to qualified undergraduate and/or graduate horn students in the College of Musical Arts. The award will be held in escrow. The recipient must apply to the administrator in writing for the funds and present qualifying receipts. Funds may not be used for BGSU tuition and/or fees.

Criteria

• Full time undergraduate and/or graduate students studying applied horn in the College of Musical Arts who have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5
• Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates financial need.

Joseph C. and Zola R. Buford Music Endowed Scholarship

Dr. Buford taught in the Department of Geography at BGSU from 1948 until he retired in 1987. He served as chair of the department for 16 years. Teaching was Buford’s passion for which he was remembered and loved by his students. His classes were always popular and in great demand. Mrs. Buford taught in the Department of Geography before moving to the Registrar’s Office where she retired as the associate registrar and director of records.

Criteria

• must be an undergraduate or graduate voice major enrolled in the College of Musical Arts
• minimum 2.5 GPA
• must exemplify excellence in voice
• must be simultaneously enrolled in both choral activities and the opera program in the College of Musical Arts
• must indicate financial need—must apply through the Financial Aid Office
• involvement in extracurricular activities will be considered, but is not required

Noe Family Scholarship

Criteria

• Full time student in the College of Musical Arts with a major or minor in vocal studies
• be in good academic standing and have demonstrated the likelihood of successful completion of a bachelor's degree
• demonstrates significant participation in high school, community or campus activities.
• preference will be given in the following order:
  1. first be given to a recipient who enrolled at BGSU from Bowling Green High School
  2. second preference should be given to a student who enrolled at BGSU from any high school in northwest Ohio
• student must have at least a 2.7 GPA

Dr. Paul Makara Violin Scholarship

The Dr. Paul Makara Violin Scholarship was established to recognize student excellence in violin performance and to enhance the academic mission of the College of Musical Arts..

Criteria

• Be a citizen of the United States
• Be a returning full-time student, currently enrolled
• Be a rising sophomore, junior or senior with at least a 3.0 GPA
• Major in violin performance
• Present a very good to excellent audition that includes at least two of the following components:
  1. A movement of unaccompanied Bach
  2. A movement of a classical or romantic concerto
  3. A short piece of the candidate’s choice

Robert and Catherine Mitman Percussion Scholarship

Kevin Clyde established this award in 2009 to recognize unrivaled dedication, passion, and contribution to the craft of percussion and to the furtherance of music as a whole. This award is in memory and honor of his wonderful grandparents.

Criteria

• must be Full-time undergraduate student
• Be a rising junior or senior
• must exemplify excellence in percussion performance
• Be a returning percussion student
• Preference will be given to students majoring in percussion and are dedicated students who demonstrate potential and commitment to continue their music education beyond a bachelor’s degree
• Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
• Preference will be given to students who demonstrate community service.

Warren Allen Vocal Talent Award

Warren Allen established this scholarship to attract students to Bowling Green State University who possess exceptional vocal talents.  The award is mean to encourage out of state students to attend Bowling Green State University and pursue a vocal major.  The award is based upon the annual interest generated from the endowment and is governed by the following criteria.

Criteria

• Used to recruit outstanding graduate students in vocal performance.  If no graduate students are available, may be awarded to outstanding freshman.
• Nonrenewable and limited to 1 recipient per year.
• Financial need may be considered, but the primary focus must be on vocal talent.
