Undergraduate Programs in Special Education
Two Licenses in One Program!
The Intervention Specialist (IS) program at BGSU is one of the largest special education program in the state of Ohio and we are leaders by providing the opportunity for all IS graduates to obtain licenses in teaching Mild-Moderate and Moderate-Intensive K-12 learning environments. Our innovative program prepares undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates for employment in both Mild-Moderate (MM) and Moderate-Intensive (MI) environments. Our graduates are prepared to teach ALL students with disabilities and difficulties in learning, making them extremely marketable for schools. This is a highly competitive program with additional requirements:
- overall GPA of 3.0 for admission into the program
- must pass the OAE Licensing Examinations prior to enrolling in methods
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of an undergraduate degree in special education, students are expected to:
- Assess, diagnose and evaluate learners with special needs;
- Design instructional content for delivery to learners with special needs;
- Plan and manage the behavior, social interactions and learning environment of learners with special needs;
- Collaborate in the delivery of services to learners with special needs;
- Meet professional expectations for ethical practice in the delivery of services to learners with special needs, given the philosophical, historical and legal foundations of special education.
The Intervention Specialist program is designed to provide training in theoretical foundations of special education and evidence-based practical technical skills for individuals preparing to teach children and adolescents who have a wide-range of disabilities requiring supports from mild to intensive in order to provide the most effective educational experiences for students with exceptionalities.
