Global Understanding Component

All students in the HIED program must complete the Global Understanding Requirement.  By meeting this requirement, students will demonstrate an understanding of higher education and student affairs in a non-U.S. cultural context.  This requirement is the HIED program alternative to a foreign language requirement.

Opportunities

You will consult with your advisor to develop a plan to satisfy the Global Understanding Requirement.  The requirement may be met by one of the following:

  1. HESA Study Abroad: Participate in one of HESA's annual two- to three-week summer study abroad programs.
  2. International Internship: Participate in one of HESA's summer internships.  You must immerse yourself in the host culture for at least one month.
  3. BGSU Course: Enroll in a BGSU course (e.g., Comparative Higher Education, International Education Policy) that examines the effect of cultural elements (e.g., history, sociology, politics, religion, economics) on postsecondary education.
  4. Independent or Directed Study: Collaborate with a faculty member to explore a particular culture or the influences of that culture on postsecondary education.
You are not limited to the aforementioned opportunities.  Creativity and originality are encouraged.  Please consult with your advisor to determine how the Global Understanding Requirement may be met.  The requirement must be completed before your preliminary exams.

If you are a citizen of another country (not the United States), you must demonstrate understanding of a culture's impact on postsecondary education in a culture other than your own.
