Community Participants:

Recommended for instructors of record for courses who are interested in systematically designing and collecting data in their classroom to improve student outcomes and using the processes and outcomes, along with established research, to share findings with members of the BGSU community (i.e., merit or annual reviews) or via sharing with the larger academic community (i.e., professional workshops/conferences or academic journals). 

Community Description: 

If you're curious about what's really happening in your classroom and ready to explore those questions through research, this year-long learning community is designed for you. Grounded in Nancy L. Chick's Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, the community guides you through the full arc of SoTL inquiry — from formulating research questions and designing data collection methods to presenting and publishing your results.

During each virtual meeting, you'll engage in reflection, networking, and skill-building alongside colleagues across disciplines in a collegial environment that balances intellectual challenge with peer support. Whether you are new to SoTL or seeking to advance your existing work, you will leave with a deeper understanding of teaching and learning as a scholarly endeavor. By the end of the year, you'll walk away with a product ready to share with the larger academic community via merit reviews, academic conferences, or a journal submission.

Community Learning Outcomes:

By participating in this community, you will be able to:

• Identify meaningful, inquiry-based questions that emerge from your own teaching contexts and experiences, grounded in the principles of SoTL (Sections 1-2: Chapters 1–5; ).
• Recognize key methodological and ethical considerations in scholarly teaching connected to existing SoTL literature and research traditions (Section 2: Chapters 6–7).
• Select appropriate methods for gathering and analyzing evidence of student learning, including qualitative and quantitative approaches (Section 2: Chapters 7-8).
• Create a plan to collect, analyze, and use data to inform your teaching (Section 2: Chapters 9-10) .
• Develop strategies for communicating and disseminating SoTL findings effectively to diverse audiences within and beyond your institutions (Sections 2-3; Chapters 10-11)

Participant Expectations:

As a member of this community, you are expected to:

• Meet the community learning outcomes.
• Actively participate in and attend at least 80% of all scheduled community meetings (or meet the participation requirements determined by the facilitator).
• Effectively communicate any roadblocks with the facilitator in a timely manner.
• Complete any assignments and/or asynchronous tasks.
• Complete any necessary deliverable activities or projects as determined by the facilitator.
