M.A. in Art History

M.A. in Art History

A master’s degree in art history is more than just studying the artworks of the past. It’s about critically engaging with artistic traditions to gain a deeper understanding of our heritage, social changes and the human condition through the ages.

The BGSU School of Art is not currently accepting students into the MA in Art History program.

The M.A. in art history is a professional degree that is often used in the fields of history, museum studies, or curatorial work and can be viewed as a basis for further study towards a Ph.D.

The art history master’s degree curriculum is designed to provide students with a rich foundation in art historical research, critical analysis and professional expertise. Students are trained in contemporary methodologies and theories of the history of art, as well as in-depth examination of the many societal contexts of creative expression, art making and art expression over time.

Students in the program complete a master’s thesis – an article-length (40-50 pages) research paper. It’s written under the guidance of three art history faculty members, with the primary specializing in a field of study that closely relates to the topic.
