As BGSU Firelands celebrates its 60th anniversary, the regional campus remains a leader in accessibility and affordability.
The regional campus is a leader in accessibility and affordability, meeting students where they are in their educational journeys
When the Bowling Green State University Board of Trustees formally approved the establishment of a branch campus some six decades ago, they might have envisioned the construction of buildings, comfortable classrooms and landscaped common areas.
They realistically could have expected the educational hub to grow and expand, reaching across communities throughout the region.
But even the most creative and forward-looking minds at the University in 1965 likely did not foresee what BGSU Firelands would become.
Today, it's a place where access and affordability bring advanced education within the reach of all. It also has expanded its reach exponentially through community engagement and creative partnerships. Ultimately, BGSU Firelands is an institution where a focus on innovation and growth allows its programs to keep pace with a rapidly changing world and new learning technologies.
Dr. Allia L. Carter '12, a BGSU alumna who serves as dean of Firelands, said the campus has a primary mission of making college an option for anyone.
“For me, it’s about keeping the doors wide open and making sure no matter where someone is in life, they see Firelands as a place where they belong,” she said, noting the college’s ever-changing array of programs are designed to meet students where they are.

She emphasized the importance of building the optimum amount of flexibility into the curriculum through on-campus, online and hybrid programs to accommodate the work schedules and demands of individuals’ personal lives.
“Firelands has a very important mission to offer an affordable, high-quality university education,” Carter said, “and as we celebrate our first 60 years, we strive to meet that obligation and continue to grow, innovate and provide even more opportunities for students in this region to thrive.”
The satellite campus had a modest beginning in 1965 through classes that were offered at Sandusky High School. Construction of the permanent campus was completed two years later in 1967.
Firelands, located in Huron, Ohio, just 60 miles east of the main campus, initially offered general education and associate degree programs, but today Firelands’ academic portfolio includes bachelor’s degrees, early college opportunities, and workforce certificates that complement various other workshops, internships and career advancement initiatives.
“We are here not only to help students of any age and from any background get into college, but we also want to see them be successful,” Carter said. “At Firelands, we can help them take that initial first step and then teach them the skills and techniques to get where they want to be.”

The wide range of programs and partnerships available at Firelands are constantly innovating, adapting and adjusting to meet the needs of the diverse student body, while moving in sync with the primary mission of BGSU to serve as a public university contributing to the public good.
“We are always growing and getting stronger, and our students are our greatest asset,” she said. “Many of them will advance their education here at Firelands and stay anchored in the community. How we shape and innovate our programs is one way that both the students and the greater community benefit.”

This commitment to flexibility and community is echoed by students like Sandusky resident Marcus Cobbs, a single father with a young son who had to step away from college for several years to care for an ill family member, who found the convenience of the nearby Huron campus, and the flexibility of the educational programs at Firelands to be the ideal fit for his busy life.
“Despite everything else I have putting demands on my time, BGSU Firelands has made going back to school seamless. Instructors are accessible, and there are so many resources to help make sure that you integrate back into school,” he said. “The campus has almost a family feel to it.”
Carter intends for Firelands to build on that connection with the community.
“We want to be responsive to the community and its needs and keep the community an active and interested party in what takes place at Firelands, today and in the coming years,” she said.
