PURPOSE, TIMETABLE, AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Identify the purpose of your proposal:
This proposal is for the new Zamboni Edger for the Slater Family Ice Arena. The amount requested will cover the difference between a gas edger and an electric edger. An edger is used to maintain the ice surface where it meets the boards, and a new edger is essential for next season. While the electric edger is more expensive, it will cut down on emissions and operate more cleanly than the gas-powered version. Additionally, the cost of gas far exceeds the cost of the electricity needed to power the batteries.
If your proposal affects another division of the University and you have made contact with someone, please list the individual(s) with whom you spoke about the project and the most recent date(s) conversation(s) took place:
After speaking with Pudge on April 17th, we discussed the need for a new edger, preferably made by Zamboni. Funds have been set aside to pay for a gas edger ($3,725), but an electric edger is desired ($6,725). With the quotes from Zamboni, the application for the Green Fund came up in the conversation as a way to create a more sustainable feature in the arena’s maintenance operations.
How will your project be managed and completed?:
This project will be completed immediately upon approval by purchasing the electric Zamboni Edger. It should be noted, if an order is placed by May 15th, the freight cost for the shipment will be covered.
What's the "green" Idea?:
The Electric edger will result in lower emissions and a lower cost in the long-term by not requiring the purchase of gas for operation. This will also result in lower consumption of fossil fuels and non-renewable resources.
Budget Detail and Justification?:
The arena has allotted $3,725 in the budget for a new gas edger. The electric edger costs $6,725.00. $3,000 is requested to cover the cost difference between the two models.
Cost-Sharing Potential?:
As stated, the arena will be paying a majority of the cost, but there is no other entity that has allotted funds for this piece of machinery.
How can we keep this project going?:
This edger will serve the arena for years while the ice is maintained. The edger itself will also be maintained to prolong the life and use of the equipment as much as possible. Looking long term, there may also be more forms of equipment that could be converted to electrical versions when the time comes to purchase new models.
Who will benefit from your proposal?:
The customers of the arena will benefit due to higher quality ice while the whole University benefits from lower gas consumption and lower emissions. Additionally, the arena staff benefits from upgraded and functional equipment.
How will you measure your project's success?:
The project’s success will be measured by the application of the new Zamboni edger and the satisfaction of the arena customers with the improved ice quality. With the new edger, the arena staff will be able to provide high quality skating and hockey ice surfaces for customers while decreasing non-renewable resource consumption and emissions. If these aspects are met, this project will serve as a major success.
