English for Speakers of Other Languages
Why ESOL? Learn across cultures
The English for Speakers of Other Languages Program (ESOL) at BGSU helps you get the support you need to write and read as a non-native speaker of English. Our program helps you:
- Develop academic English skills
- Meet the demands of other degree programs
- Demonstrate proficiency as an International Teaching Assistant/Associate (as required by Ohio State Law).

ESOL Students
“I learned how to write and think faster in my second language. My vocabulary skills improved. Now I know how to cite properly.”
“My English definitely improved. And it's not just a little bit."
"This course has been extremely effective....Before starting the course I did not feel comfortable with writing, and now,...I am not only able to write better, but motivated to write....”
“This course and the instructor helped me to be more confident. I was afraid of a class participation and was too shy to speak something out, but [my instructor] encouraged me and taught me to be brave. This helped me not only for this class, but in every class and also in my daily life.”
ESOL Intercultural Statement
We support all of our students and faculty, and we value the different cultural perspectives that international students, in particular, bring to the BGSU community. Our classrooms are spaces for our students to learn as well as share their opinions and values. Through our office, classes, and outreach programs, we will continue to help build positive intercultural relationships among students and teachers from around the world.
