Why Rhetoric and Writing Studies? Developing future teachers and writers.
The Rhetoric and Writing Program at BGSU encourages you to study, teach, and use rhetoric and writing to change both your lives and the lives of students. Our program helps you:
- Prepare to teach writing at a number of levels, including middle-school, high school, AP, dual enrollment (like Ohio’s College Credit Plus program), and two-year colleges
- Evaluate writing approaches and writing pedagogy

Our mission
The Literary and Textual Studies Program at BGSU helps students:
- Develop understanding of subject matter in relation to larger historical and/or cultural contexts, including multicultural contexts.
- Make connections between theory and practice, applying that theory not only to understanding texts, but also to solving problems and teaching effectively.
- Generalize from experiences with texts, communication situations, and teaching situations.
- Develop skills of creative and/or critical thinking.
