The 2016 Bowling Green New Music Festival

and SPEKTRAL QUARTET

 

At the heart of the Center’s activities is the renowned New Music Festival. This annual event celebrates the contemporary arts through concerts, panels, art exhibitions, seminars, master classes and papers. Begun in 1980, the festival has hosted John Adams, John Luther Adams, Samuel Adler, Milton Babbitt, William Bolcom, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Chen Yi, John Corigliano, George Crumb, Mario Davidovsky, Anthony Davis, Philip Glass, John Harbison, Lou Harrison, Jennifer Higdon, Karel Husa, Joan La Barbara, David Lang, Paul Lansky, George Lewis, Robert Morris, Pauline Oliveros, Shulamit Ran, Bernard Rands, Terry Riley, Christopher Rouse, Frederic Rzewski, Gunther Schuller, Joseph Schwantner, Bright Sheng, Steven Stucky, Morton Subotnick, Joan Tower, Vladimir Ussachevsky and more than 350 other guest composers and musicians.

In 2016, we are proud to feature acclaimed composer Dai Fujikura and featured guest ensemble Spektral Quartet. A festival schedule will be posted below in the spring.

The Center accepts scores year-round for consideration on the Bowling Green New Music Festival and performance on other University-sponsored concerts.

Composer Talk: Jennifer Higdon

Jennifer Higdon is a major figure in contemporary Classical music, receiving the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in Music for her Violin Concerto and a 2010 Grammy for her Percussion Concerto. Higdon enjoys several hundred performances a year of her works, and blue cathedral is one of America’s most performed contemporary orchestral works, with more than 500 performances worldwide since its premiere in 2000. Her works have been recorded on over four dozen CDs. Higdon's acclaimed first opera, Cold Mountain, by based on the best-selling novel by Charles Frazier, was premiered by the Santa Fe Opera in August 2015. Higdon holds the Rock Chair in Composition at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

Fifth House Ensemble is one of Chicago’s most imaginative and innovative chamber music groups. Since its inception, Fifth House Ensemble has been committed to the mission of sharing the art of chamber music in a way that is personal, relevant, and entertaining. Their concert will feature music by Dan Visconti, Stacy Garrop and Jennifer Higdon.
