Zach began with the Office of Campus Sustainability in August 2022 as a graduate student intern. Zach is now a BGSU alumnus, receiving his M.S. in Applied Geospatial Science in Fall 2023. He is originally from Pinckney, MI and attended the University of Michigan-Flint where he graduated with a B.S. in Energy and Sustainable Systems and a minor in Urban and Regional Planning with Honors in 2018. Before coming to BGSU for a master's program, Zach's many experiences include assisting in the mapping of lead service lines in the City of Flint during the water crisis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), serving 2 separate terms in AmeriCorps for the City of Flint, mapping ORV park trails for Genesee County, MI, and also performing public health research in Flint neighborhoods with Michigan State. As a Master's student, he interned with the City of Perrysburg Stormwater Management office, contributing more than 6,000 edits to the City's GIS stormwater and sanitary line geodatabase. Zach is now the full-time Sustainability Coordinator within the Office of Campus Sustainability. His interests in sustainability are multifaceted; his initial passion for sustainability was for recycling and diverting things from the landfill. Now, in addition to zero-waste initiatives, his interests include sustainable transportation, enhancing greenspaces, composting, and holistic environmental education. Some of Zach’s favorite pastimes include outdoor activities such as running and biking, trying out new cafés, attending church events, and watching motorsports. If Zach had to choose between BGSU orange or brown, he would pick orange!
