Alyssa's research focuses on the convergence of old and new mediums and narratives or uses in transition. Her work covers topics such as organizational communication strategies of multichannel networks, the rhetoric of cover albums, and television’s shifting business models. She also pursues inquiries within gender and women’s studies, such as searching for the subaltern voice on social media, and portrayals of gender in the American Girl brand.
