2019-20 highlights of faculty, staff and student accomplishments

Accomplishments

The faculty, staff and students in the College of Arts and Sciences are productive in their research, scholarship and service. Listed below are some of the highlights from the 2019-2020 academic year.

Drs. Peggy Giordano, Monica Longmore and Wendy ManningDrs. Wendy Manning, Peggy Giordano, and Monica Longmore of the Sociology Department received a $797,000 grant from the National Institute of Justice to explore how and why individuals move away, or desist, from crime in the three-year study “Mechanisms Underlying Desistance from Crime.”

Dr. Peggy Giordano was the 2019 recipient of the Edwin H. Sutherland Award for her outstanding contributions to the field of criminology. She was recognized at an awards ceremony during the American Society of Criminology annual meeting this past November.

Dr. Karen D. Johnson-Webb, an associate professor of geography, was elected to the executive committee of the American Association of Geographers for a two-year term. She is secretary of the executive committee and a regional councilor for the East Lakes Division of the association.

Dr. David Skaggs, a professor emeritus of history, was awarded the 2019 Commodore Dudley W. Knox Medal for his lifetime of work in the field of naval history. The award is presented annually by the Naval Historical Foundation.


Niki Kalaf 

Dr. Nicole Kalaf-Hughes, associate professor of political science, received the CQ Press Award for Teaching Innovation from the American Political Science Association for her creative teaching methods and dedication to her students' success.


Louis Katzner 

Dr. Louis Katzner, trustee professor of philosophy, marked 50+ years with BGSU at the 2020 Faculty and Staff Years of Service ceremony. He joined the university in 1969 and says he is just as excited to come to work today as he was when he started.


Valeria Grinberg 

Dr. Valeria Grinberg Pla, world languages and cultural studies professor, presented the College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Faculty Lecture. In her presentation, “Making Sense of the Lack of Sense: Filming in Post-War Guatemala,” Grinberg Pla discussed how words such as democracy, freedom and justice cease to have meaning in post-war societies because of the suspension of the social, political and cultural structures that define them.


US News World Report 600

U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 Best Graduate School Rankings included three programs associated with Arts and Sciences: the graduate program in fine arts was ranked No. 73, up from its previous 114th ranking; clinical psychology moved up to No. 88 from 135, and the Master of Public Administration earned a spot at No. 152.


2020 addy awards

Two individuals with ties to the School of Art’s graphic design program were honored at the 2020 Toledo American Advertising Federations ADDY Awards ceremony. Senior Anna Kiesewetter received the Gold ADDY award for her work, “Strive: BGSUGD/AIGA Portfolio Review Day Materials.” Her project included concept strategy, brand identity, promotional poster, wayfinding, name badges, sign-up sheets and digital promotions. Emily Feaster, a 2019 graduate of the program, received the Silver ADDY award for “Into the Depths,” which was her 2019 senior thesis project that addressed the environmental issues of shark fishing and shark finning.

Dr. Radhika Gajjala, professor of Communication and of American Culture Studies, was chosen as the recipient of the 2020 Teresa Award for the Advancement of Feminist Scholarship. The award committee from the International Communication Association acknowledged the impact of Gajjala’s scholarship in promoting advocacy for subaltern women and in pioneering feminist research of cyberspace.

Dr. Hans K. Wildschutte, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, earned the Collaborative Research and Creative Work award as part of the 2020 Faculty Excellence Awards.


Matt Schumann History

For the 2020 Faculty Excellence Awards, Dr. Matt Schumann, assistant teaching professor in the Department of History, received the Elliot L. Blinn Award for Faculty-Undergraduate Student Innovative Basic Research/Creative Work.

The Department of Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office received the Senior Advising Council Friends of Advising Award. This award recognizes the unit's effective support of advising through its programs, services and resources.

College of Arts and Sciences academic advisors, DeVona Smith and Rick Lofgren, each received the Academic Advising & Mentoring Excellence Award.

Two visual musical works created by Bonnie Mitchell, professor of digital arts, and Dr. Elainie Lillios, professor of theory and composition in the BGSU College of Musical Arts, were featured at the California-based SoundPedro 2020, an annual ear-oriented multi-sensory event, presenting artists whose work addresses sound and aural perception in combination with other senses. The visual work "Paradigm Shift" begins at the 3:30 time stamp in the video and "Sweeping Memories" begins at 16:10.
