Transfer Frequently Asked Questions

You are considered a transfer student if you have earned 12 or more college-level (non-remedial) semester hours after you graduate from high school graduation or get your GED. 

If the only college-level credit you have earned was completed before graduating from high school – through a program such as College Credit Plus, post-secondary enrollment options (PSEO), dual enrollment, etc. – you are considered a first-time freshman applicant.

No. Grades and grade point averages do not transfer. Your previous college grades will be used to determine your eligibility for admission to BGSU and admission to select programs of study once you are a student at BGSU. Your previous college grade point average also will be used to determine eligibility for honors and academic recognition.

Transfer students are not required to live on campus as long as they meet one of the following requirements:

1. Taking more than 60 credit hours 
2. Live within 50 miles of BGSU
3. Have an associate degree
4. Are 20 years or older

Students who earned a diploma from an Ohio high school and move back to Ohio to pursue a degree at BGSU are considered Ohio residents through the Forever Buckeye program. 

All other students must establish residency in Ohio for 12 consecutive months before being considered an Ohio resident. It is the student’s responsibility to indicate the proper state of residence at the time of registration. 

Information on Ohio residency requirements can be found online through the Office of Registration and Records. In some cases, the residence status review committee may request additional information as part of their official review.

Admission documents (high school, college and university transcripts; GED diploma; Student Conduct Form; etc.) should be sent directly to the Office of Admissions. 

BGSU prefers electronic submission from institutions that subscribe to a secure submission service. Transcripts are not accepted from students.

Application fees are waived for domestic transfer students. International transfer students may pay their application fee online. You will need the email and password you used when applying to BGSU.

The only way to get an official evaluation of which credits will transfer is to apply to BGSU. An official transfer credit evaluation is sent to you about two weeks after you have been admitted.

Generally, coursework completed at other accredited institutions is considered for transfer credit if:

• You earned a D or better
• The course is comparable to coursework in the BGSU curriculum

Transfer credit also may be awarded for learning experiences acquired outside a formal classroom setting, such as military credit.  Contact Nontraditional and Military Student Services for details.

A conversion to semester hours is done by multiplying the number of quarter hours earned/attempted by 0.67. The resulting number of semester hours will appear less than the number of quarter hours you have earned/attempted. 

Students from schools on quarters do not generally have to take additional classes when transferring to BGSU. But be aware that in some situations it may be necessary to complete additional requirements in order to obtain the minimum number of hours required to graduate or to meet the requirements for specific degree programs.

Ohio Transfer 36 (formerly known as the Ohio Transfer Module) is meant to ensure that general education coursework completed at one Ohio public institution of higher education transfers to another in the state.

The transfer module contains 36-40 semester hours (54-60 quarter hours) of specified general education course credits in English composition, mathematics, fine arts, humanities, social science, behavioral science, natural science, physical science and interdisciplinary coursework.

A transfer module completed at an Ohio public college or university will automatically meet the requirements at BGSU once you are accepted. However, you may be required to meet additional requirements that are not included in the transfer module.

Check with your college and degree program to verify that your previous courses meet degree program requirements at BGSU.

Yes. If you scored a 3 or better on your Advanced Placement (AP) subject tests you can receive college credit at BGSU. Contact the College Board AP Program and have an official score report sent to the following address:

Current course requirements for any area of study can be found in the BGSU undergraduate catalog. Just search for your program.

After you are admitted, you are required to meet with an academic advisor. Your advisor will review your official transfer credit evaluation with you and help you register for classes. We will send you a text and email when it’s time to schedule this initial appointment.
