Fast Facts on American Marriages

  • In 2024 there were about 2.4 million new marriages in the United States (FP-25-30).
  • With 31.2 women marrying per 1,000 unmarried women, the U.S. refined marriage rate remained stable over the past 13 years and in 2024 returned to 2011 levels (FP-25-30)
  • The age at first marriage continued to tick up. At 2.42 it has reached the same level as observed in 2000. This means there were over two marriages for every divorce in 2024 (FP-25-32).
  • In 2022, 57% of adults over age 65 were married (FP-24-04). Further, most older adults who were married were in their first marriages (FP-25-08).
  • About 1.4% of current marriages in 2024 were among same-sex couples, amounting to nearly 850,000 married couples (FP-26-10).
  • In 2023, the remarriage rate was higher for males than females (34.4 per 1,00 for males and 18.5 per 1,000 for females). About one-quarter of marriages in 2023 were remarriages (FP-25-03).
  • Nearly four out of five females lived with their spouse prior to getting married (FP-25-25).
  • Most currently married individuals were in a first marriage regardless of couple type. In 2024, among individuals married to a spouse of a different sex it was 78% and those married to a spouse of the same sex it was 80% (FP-26-10).
  • Refined marriage rates were highest for both males (63.0 per 1,000 unmarried) and females (62.01 per 1,000 unmarried) in their thirties in 2024. Since 2010, the marriage rate has increased males and females age 50+ (FP-26-03).
