Deep Sea Angel | Henry Hartley
This interpretive work for piano is heavily inspired by the deep ocean and is named after one personal favorite inhabitant of such an environment: the sea angel. At a mere two inches, it flies through the abyss, flashing brilliant colors back at any source of man-made light observing. Watching footage of them is like watching small suns dancing in the dark void of the deep ocean. The purpose of this piece is to be interpreted uniquely by different performers. Rhythms are also to be interpreted freely and given significant expression. The pitches are to be played are notated, but small bursts of improvisation where appropriate are encouraged.
Bloom for Longer | Samuel Scheele
"Bloom for Longer" is a lyrical exploration of unrequited love, memory, and longing. Through imagery of pedestals, flowers, and vines, the song delves into the persistence of love and its emotional cycles. The text, also by Jonathan D. Kroeger, concludes with a poignant plea for the flowers to "Bloom for Longer," encapsulating a sense of hopeless realization.
El Corazón por Dentro | Dominic Gomez
"El Corazón por Dentro (The Heart Inside)" was inspired by a sculpture created by Georgia Ray. The sculpture features a cello without its front, containing a heart inside. This symbolizes the composer’s emotional connection to the cello, portraying it as alive and capable of speech. The piece includes sections with whispering noises and rhythmic tapping, imitating the heartbeat of the instrument.
