2022 Recap

The Northwestern Ohio Science Olympiad Regional made a glorious return to Bowling Green State University on February 26, 2022. Despite the uncertainty with the ongoing COVID situation, total registration numbers remained strong, and as a result, a record number of 12 teams qualified for the state competition from the BGSU regional: six from each division.

For the 7th consecutive season McCord Junior High and Northview High School took first place in their respective divisions, and for the 3rd consecutive season, the two Northview teams placed 1st and 2nd overall (59 and 84 points) in the C division. McCord won 11 of the 23 events in the B division, while the Northview Gold team won 7 events in the C division.

In the B division, the Arbor Hills Gold team finished a close 2nd, just 9 points behind McCord (57 to 66). The other schools qualifying for the state competition were Timberstone Blue (120), Springfield Blue (132), Van Buren (170), and Paulding (171). For Van Buren, it was their first time qualifying for state in just their 4th year in the competition. The Timberstone silver team also had a strong showing finishing 5th overall (136). Both Ottawa Hills teams had strong performances medaling in several events, as did Arbor Hills Green, St. Rose, and Springfield White.

In the C Division, Springfield earned the second-place trophy with its highest finish at BGSU totaling 105 points followed closely by Sylvania Southview team 1’s 107 points. The three other teams that qualified for the state competition were Shawnee Black (143), Ottawa Hills Green (166) and Oak Harbor (214), which won its first trophy and first state qualification at the BGSU regional.

Sylvania Southview team 2 (143) and Springfield White (197) also had strong performances with numerous medal winners and overall team rankings of 6th and 8th, respectively. Arlington made its return to the BGSU regional with a solid showing with four event winners and a 10th place finish overall just one place away from state qualifying. Paulding also had several solid performances and medaled in two events finishing 11th overall as a team. Tinora, Lincolnview, and Maumee Valley Country Day competed in selected events and produced some strong performances, including one gold medal victory for each school.

A special thanks to our sponsors Johnson & Johnson Vision, Linde, and Lubrizol for their generous support of this competition. Thanks also to our event supervisors and volunteers who made this event possible.

We hope to see all teams back plus more in 2023.
