BGSU recognized for state-leading innovation on inaugural AI25 list

Presented by Ohio Tech News and OhioX, the new list honors statewide leaders in the AI economy

Two leading technology entities recognized Bowling Green State University as a leader in Ohio for its thoughtful and impactful use of artificial intelligence, highlighting the University's work to prepare students for the workforce while advancing innovation across the state.

Ohio Tech News and OhioX, a statewide nonprofit technology association, named Bowling Green to their inaugural AI25 Companies and Organizations list, which recognizes leaders turning AI into real-world impact across the state.

Bowling Green – the first university in Ohio to create a computer science program – has continued to adapt as it prepares students for the career of the future.

Last year, BGSU became the first university in the nation to launch a customizable AI+X bachelor’s degree, which blends a core education in artificial intelligence with a secondary discipline to empower students to design field-specific solutions to support AI-driven tools and applications.

“This announcement recognizes BGSU’s commitment to integrating our industry partners’ feedback into our teaching, research and innovation efforts across the University,” said Steve Russell, Bowling Green’s chief partnership officer. “Through programs like our customizable AI + X bachelor’s degree and our history of innovation, we continue providing value to Ohio’s business community, from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups.

“As a right-sized institution, BGSU can quickly scale emerging technology programs while remaining accessible and easy for industry partners to navigate.”

The AI25 list, which includes major corporations, educators, startups, healthcare systems and public-sector agencies, will be an annual spotlight that recognizes innovation and responsible use of AI by the major players in the state that are helping to mold Ohio’s growing AI economy.

With its history of preparing students for in-demand careers – in developing fields such as computer and data science – Bowling Green State University is playing a unique role to support Ohio’s growing economy and workforce.  Bowling Green also continues to integrate machine learning, analytics and predictive modeling into its academic programs in advanced manufacturing, engineering, healthcare and more to ensure graduates are prepared to meet employer demands in Ohio and beyond.

Recently, a state economic development agency selected BGSU for funding to commercialize research innovations, which could streamline difference-making technologies developed at the University to aid Ohio-based businesses.

BGSU also prioritizes industry-forward partnerships that foster collaboration between its academic community and businesses, including a pilot program between the School of Engineering and two Ohio-based companies that leverages AI research expertise at the University to work toward a stronger state economy.

The 2026-27 academic year will welcome the second cohort of the AI + X degree program, which allows students to combine computer science, mathematics, journalism, physics, history, or public relations with artificial intelligence.
