BGSU names Ice Arena director

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Bowling Green State University has named a director of the Ice Arena. Jamie Baringer will assume the position on July 1.

Baringer comes to BGSU from the Lou and Gib Reese Ice Arena in Newark, Ohio, where she served as the general manager. She is a certified Ice Arena Manager, Ice Arena Operator and Ice Arena Programmer, and has experience in university-level intramural and recreational sports programs.

A native of the Cleveland area, Baringer is involved in a number of professional organizations including the Ice Skating Institute, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, American Association for Leisure and Recreation and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. She holds a Master of Education degree in Sports Management from Cleveland State University and a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from Baldwin-Wallace College.

“Jamie’s 16 years in sport, recreation and ice arena management provides the experience needed to help shape our arena’s future,” said Dr. Ed Whipple, vice president for student affairs.

“It’s a great time to join the team and bring back the glory to the Ice Arena. There will be some challenges, but it’s a challenge I can take and run with. I’m excited to serve the University and the Bowling Green community,” Baringer said.

Baringer will replace interim director Jeff Crawford, who has held the position since August 2009. “Jeff has done a wonderful job running the arena these last 10 months and keeping things moving forward. We appreciate all of his hard work,” Whipple said.

The Ice Arena is currently closed for upgrades to its compressors, chillers and infrastructure. It’s scheduled to reopen at the end of the summer. A fundraising campaign is also under way to help enhance the arena and endow scholarships for the BGSU hockey program. “Bring Back the Glory” has raised over $2 million, with a goal of $5 million.
