Below is a list of scholarships available to undergraduates in Biological Sciences at BGSU. These scholarships represent generous contributions by alumni, parents, and faculty and are designed to recognize excellence in academic scholarship and promote research by undergraduates. Application and selection for these awards occurs each spring.

Barry R. Morstain Biology Scholarship

The Barry R. Morstain Biology Scholarship recognizes rising juniors or seniors who demonstrate academic performance majoring in Biology. Requirements: Rising juniors or seniors; Biology major; 3.0 minimum GPA. Strong preference given to minority students majoring in Biology.

Biological Sciences Alumni Scholarship 

The Biological Sciences Alumni Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding high school senior who has been admitted to BGSU with a declared major in Biological Sciences. Requirements: High school GPA of 3.5 and composite ACT score of 26 or above.

Cynthia Collin Stong Marine Biology Scholarship

The Cynthia Collin Stong Marine Biology Scholarship is awarded to provide a summer scholarship to study marine biology. Requirements: Biology major enrolled in the Marine & Aquatic specialization; preference will be given to rising sophomores and juniors; be participating in approved field programs at marine stations, freshwater stations will be considered; preference shall be given to students planning to take courses during the entire 10-week summer field program at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, which is affiliated with Bowling Green State University; an approved off-campus field program must provide a course grade and credit that will count toward the recipient’s graduation requirements. The recipient(s) will be required to submit a final report and make a presentation to current and/or potential BGSU marine biology students about the benefits of his/her experience. 

Dawson S. and Sylvia A. Patterson Scholarship

The Patterson Scholarship recognizes pre-medical students in pursuit of their education at Bowling Green State University to qualify as candidates for admission to a college of medicine. Requirements: Senior; pre-med students studying to qualify as candidates for admission to a college of medicine. 

Dennis R. Whitmore Scholarship

The Dennis R. Whitmore Scholarship is awarded to provide students with financial support. Requirements: Declared major in Biology or Microbiology; sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum of 30 semester hours completed at BGSU; minimum GPA 3.3. Preference given to applicants with a commitment to the study of microbiology.

Edward J. Karlin Memorial Scholarship

The Edward J. Karlin Memorial Scholarship recognizes an outstanding student in Biology. Requirements: Outstanding student in biology; upper 20% of class scholastically.

Harold E. Tinnappel Scholarship

The Harold E. Tinnappel Scholarship recognizes a young man your young woman who by his or her outstanding record thus far has indicated a potential for a high level of success at Bowling Green State University in a full-time course of study in his or her chosen area of concentration.

Requirements: Full-time student; Preference given to an applicant who has a vocational or avocational interest in conservation, horticulture, or botany.  The scholarship is renewable.

James D. Graham Memorial Scholarship

The James D. Graham Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding junior or senior Biology major, in recognition of the accomplishments of Dr. Graham, as a scientist and faculty member in cell biology from 1969-1975.  Requirements:  Junior or Senior majoring in Biology. The scholarship is non-renewable.  

Jean Pasakarnis Buchanan Junior/Senior Scholarship in Biology 

The Jean Pasakarnis Buchanan Junior/Senior Scholarship in Biology is awarded to qualified undergraduate students in Biology.  Requirements: Biological Sciences major (including any with a specialization); rising junior or senior; 3.3 minimum GPA and 30 semester hours completed at BGSU.

McKinney-Whitwer Biological Sciences Scholarship

The McKinney-Whitwer Scholarship encourages an appreciation of lifelong learning, and the importance of sharing talents to help others. Requirements: Majoring in Biological Sciences; rising junior or senior; shall have demonstrated significant record to succeed; and shall show promise of achieving professional distinction in a career in the Biological Sciences.

Multicultural Student Scholarship

The Multicultural Student Scholarship is awarded to a minority student Biology major who will be a sophomore, junior, or senior during the academic year scholarship funds will be used.  Requirements:  3.0 minimum GPA and evidence of leadership potential through participation in departmental or university activities.

Myra L. Patchen Biology Scholarship

The Myra L. Patchen Biology Scholarship provides an opportunity for future BGSU students to discover the passion of research and development which will lead to life changing discoveries in areas of medicine or pharmaceutical development. Requirements: Majoring in Biological Sciences; rising sophomore; Ohio resident (US citizen); overall GPA of 3.7. Preference given to Biological Science majors who are participating in research with a Biology faculty member. Financial need.  Renewable as long as current or past recipients submit another request and continue to meet all criteria.

Robert C. Romans Biological Scholarship

The Robert C. Romans Biological Scholarship recognizes incoming freshman from local high schools to pursue an education and a subsequent career in the Biological Sciences. Requirements: Entering freshman from Wood County, Ohio schools (Bowling Green, Eastwood, Elmwood, Otsego & North Baltimore); declared major in Biological Science; minimum high school GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale; must be entering freshman (continuing freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students are not eligible).

Schedel Foundation Scholarship

The Schedel Foundation Scholarship is awarded to encourage and recognize academic achievement in the Biological Sciences.  Requirements: Rising sophomore or junior; full-time student majoring in Biological Sciences; 3.0 minimum GPA and demonstrated interest in environmental concerns.

Stephen S. Steel Scholarship

The Steel S. Steel Scholarship is awarded to support a student pursuing an internship experience in Biology or chemistry. Requirements: Sophomore or junior; Biology or Chemistry major; sophomores must have a 2.0 minimum GPA; juniors must have a 2.5 minimum GPA. Internship must be approved by Biology or Chemistry Department. Preference given to student completing an off-campus internship experience. Recipients must submit a proposal requesting the funds and identify how the internship will assist him/her in academic endeavors. Nonrenewable.

Suzanne K. Miller-Kobalka Undergraduate Assistantship

The Dr. Suzanne K Miller-Kobalka Undergraduate Assistantships in Biological Science was established to support upperclassmen who serve as a research apprentice for one semester with a faculty member in Biological Science. Eligibility: You must be a junior or senior, be a major in Biological Sciences, be enrolled in BIOL 4010 (Introduction to Research), be a research assistant the semester the scholarship is awarded and have a minimum 3.00 GPA.

T. Richard Fisher Biology Scholarship

The T. Richard Fisher Biology Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student majoring in biology. Requirements:  Full-time student majoring in Biology; 3.0 minimum GPA; 30 semester hours completed at BGSU; recipient shall be student(s) attending a summer biological field station. The scholarship is renewable.

Waldo and Evelyn Steidtmann Scholarship

The Waldo and Evelyn Steidtmann recognizes an outstanding junior or senior with a declared major in Biology. Requirements: Junior or senior; Biology major; 3.3 minimum GPA; must have completed more than 30 semester hours of credit; preference given to outstanding student in the plant sciences. Non-renewable.
