Former biology major Jessica (Guyer) Stevens '06 excelled both in competition and in the classroom during her 4 years as a BGSU gymnast. She was both an Academic All-American and a first team All-MAC competitor from 2003-06 for the Falcons.
In competition, Stevens was a co-captain and first team All-MAC competitor in 2005-06. She earned multiple MAC Gymnast of the Week honors during her career, and was part of the program's record breaking single-meet team score of 196.100 in 2005. Individually, she scored a 9.950 on floor, which remains the 2nd best score in program history. As a junior, she was a NCAA regional alternate on both floor and vault.
Stevens was named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches and was a 4 time Scholastic All-American, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout her college career. The Worthington Kilbourne High School graduate was named to ESPN The Magazine's 2005 Academic All-District team and was a finalist for the prestigious Walter Byers Scholarship her senior year at BG. As a Walter Byers finalist, she earned an academic scholarship for post-graduate studies. Stevens was also an Academic All-MAC competitor and a MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honoree. She represented BGSU at the NCAA National Student-Athlete Development Conference in 2005 and was named the Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete in 2006.
Stevens continued to excel following her graduation from BGSU. She earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Wright State University in 2010 and completed her residency in Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 2014. She was named Chief Resident at UNC in her final year of training and also received the Gregory Sheldon Leadership Award in 2014. Stevens is currently a partner in the largest anesthesia group in Columbus: Midwest Physician Anesthesia Services, which serves 2 hospitals and 3 outpatient surgical centers in the area, providing services to over 55,000 patients annually.
She has given numerous state and national presentations throughout her education and training. She has traveled to Swaziland on medical missions and continues to participate in medical student and resident education. Her hobbies include international health, medical education, sports, running, cooking and spending time with family and friends. She is married to her husband of 5 years, Cory Stevens ('06), who was also a BGSU athlete, playing men's soccer.
