Internship Placement Opportunities

The following institutions are seeking interns. Some have specific application deadlines and procedures; check below for details. This is only a partial list; be sure to check out the "Finding Internships" page to find more opportunities.

The Ohio Legislature's Legislative Internship Program  selects graduating students to serve as aides to members of the State Assembly and State Senate or work for the legislative arm of the Ohio Legislature, the Legislative Service Commission. These positions pay about $25,000 for the year and interns often go on to take permanent positions in public service in the state legislature or other state agencies. Bowling Green has a terrific record in placing graduates in this program. Applications are due each year in mid April, but preliminaries need to be taken care of as early as February. The Toledo Museum of Art seeks graduate history student interns in all fields. This world class institution is located only a half hour away and, according to a museum administrator, needs "much more than art historians." They value people who can help place art in a broader historical context and who can research, write, and teach. Projects for prospective interns there include researching and writing text panels for displays; contributing to the Museum's periodic publications that describe its collections; researching and writing the Museum's self guided audio tours; and designing curricula for educational outreach programming. Because TMA houses collections with artifacts from much of the world and not just the U.S., the museum needs people with historical expertise in Africa, ancient Greece and Rome, Europe, and the Far East as well as the U.S. Please see Professor Gidlow if you are interested.

Policy Matters , a non-profit policy research organization interested in economic policy in Ohio funded by the George Gund Foundation, seeks interns to work on a project on "living wage" laws in Ohio. Contact  ksopko@policymattersohio.org if you are interested.

The Wood County Historical Center offers a range of internships during the school year and the summer, including the $2500 Rebecca Pelton Memorial Summer Fellowship. If you are interested in a summer placement, look for an announcement during the spring term inviting applications. Toledo Metroparks offers a number of public history summer internships at Providence Metroparks that pay an hourly wage at Providence Metropark for historical interpreters. Look for an announcement during the spring term inviting applications.

The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village offer the Simmons Internship Program for students to work on curatorial projects there. These summer internships pay up to $1400 per month and are awarded on a competitive basis. The application deadline is in February. Look for an announcement inviting applications.

Sauder Village, located about an hour away from Bowling Green in Archbold, Ohio, recreates an early nineteenth century Ohio village and farm and features demonstrations of skilled craftsmen including potters, tinsmiths, and gunmakers. For summer 2003, Sauder Village seeks interns to serve as historical interpreters for the Ohio Bicentennial "Natives and Newcomers" exhibit. Fall and spring internships doing curatorial work or research are also possible. A stipend may be available. See Prof. Gidlow if you are interested.

The Advocacy Institute in Washington, DC offers the Angie Martin Public Interest Fellowship Program each summer for students with interests in developing community leadership or tobacco control. The School of Russian and Asian Studies offers internship placements in many parts of Russia in museum studies, business, international relations, and other fields. For more information, write to  intern@sras.org .

The Washington Center is a comprehensive service that places and houses students from universities across the country in Washington, DC internships. The program charges for tuition and housing and some scholarships are available. BGSU students in the program have interned at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S.Department of State, the U.S. House of Representatives, Howard University, and Amnesty International, among others. The  Ohio Memory project of the Ohio Historical Society seeks students to transcribe primary sources for its growing Ohio Memory Online Scrapbook, a collection of documents for researchers and teachers. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation offers Practicum Grants for Ph.D. students who pursue internship opportunities outside academe. Grants are available in amounts up to $1500. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
