CIVICs 250 Scholars Application

For those that are interested in applying to be a part of the 2027 CIVICs 250 Scholars Cohort, please read this page carefully. The program consists of three main parts: Monthly Virtual Learning Sessions, Summer Seminar Week, and potential participation in BGSU Campus Events.

Monthly Virtual Learning Sessions

CIVICs 250 Scholars should prepare for each virtual meeting by completing any questionnaires as well as a short amount of pre-reading materials. Participants should come ready to discuss questions and have collaborative conversations with colleagues about the discussion topics.

Summer Seminar Week

Teacher participants will meet in-person on BGSU's campus for 5 days to collaborate and learn about a variety of different American Civics documents from scholars, faculty and others with relevant expertise. Throughout the Seminar week, participating teachers will also be preparing 3-5 lessons that will be used with their students during the 2027-2028 school year. These lessons should be based on material learned throughout their participation time, and teachers will be asked to follow up on these lessons several times during the school year following the year of their participation in the program. More guidance will be given to participants as the learning community begins. 

BGSU Campus Events

The Democracy and Public Policy Network, in collaboration with the C. Raymond Marvin Center, Departments of History and Political Science and the College of Arts and Sciences, host a variety of events centered around civic engagement each year. As a part of this cohort, you (and your students) will be invited to participate in these programs throughout the year of your participation in the cohort, as well as years to follow, should you still be interested. 2027 Cohort Important Dates

The 2027 BGSU CIVICs 250 Scholars Cohort will take place from November, 2026 - August, 2027, with some additional follow-up during the 2027-2028 school year. The time requirements include participating in monthly virtual meetings in December-May, as well as a week long Seminar in June. The dates/times are listed below.

Collaborative Virtual Learning Session Dates

Each virtual meeting will have a small amount of reading or other assignment to complete before each session, which will be shared with participants. Virtual links for each session will be sent out prior to each meeting.

Summer Seminar Dates

This week-long in-person learning will be located on the campus of Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH. More details will be shared with the participants as the Seminar approaches.

  • June 7-11, 2027, 8:30am-4:00pm each day

Because of the depth of learning and conversations that will be taking place during this in-person seminar, we ask that all participants be available for every day of the in-person seminar for the duration of the week.

BGSU Campus Events

During your time in the CIVICs 250 Scholars Program, you will be invited to various civics and history related events that occur on BGSU's campus. Some of these programs may include a potential visit with your students, and others may be for your own professional development and networking. 

Application

We welcome teachers of any grade, content or ability level to apply to this program. However, those who primarily teach Social Studies will receive priority status if space becomes limited.

If you are interested in this program, please fill out the application linked above. Applications for the 2027 CIVICs 250 Scholars Cohort are open from September 15th, 2026 through October 19th, 2026. No applications will be accepted after that due date.
