Mathematics

Mathematics is the language of logic that drives the world forward – from forecasting financial markets to fueling the next wave of artificial intelligence. At Bowling Green State University, our bachelor’s degree in mathematics program empowers you to think critically, solve complex problems and shape the future of technology, education and innovation.

The B.S. degree in mathematics combines rigorous theoretical training with hands-on computational experience. It prepares you for immediate career success and advanced career study. It’s also a great second major. The most successful mathematicians are lifelong learners who adapt to emerging technologies, embrace computational tools and see patterns where others see chaos.

Careers with a mathematics degree offer exceptional earning potential and median salaries significantly and consistently above national averages. The analytical and problem-solving skills developed through mathematical training are highly transferable. They provide career flexibility and advancement opportunities across industries.

Career - what can you do with a mathematics degree?

Math powers the algorithms, models and equations behind so many aspects of our modern world, including the:

  • Streaming recommendations you enjoy on weekends
  • Geometry that guides your GPS on roadtrips
  • Cryptography that secures your digital transactions
  • Logistics networks that ensure your shipments are on time
  • Models that speed vaccine development
  • Equations that help climate scientists predict future changes.

Careers in mathematics are remarkably diverse. Today’s mathematicians are digital architects, data detectives and innovation catalysts. They are the minds behind new and exciting technologies, smart financial strategies and scientific insights that shape our world.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an 11% growth rate for mathematicians and statisticians over the next decade (far faster than the average for all occupations). A mathematics degree from BGSU positions you at the forefront of these opportunities.

  • Mathematicians are in high demand as data scientists, learning machine specialists and algorithm developers
  • In finance, they work as investment analysts, risk managers and consultants
  • Many contribute to government efforts in national security and public policy.
  • Others pursue advanced degrees to become professors, researchers or think tank analysts
  • Math skills are also key in cutting-edge fields like artificial intelligence, quantum computing and environmental modeling

A mathematics minor can be an asset for those pursuing careers as economists, sociologists, psychologists, political scientists and educators.

Curriculum

A mathematics B.S. prepares you to master the language of logic while exploring cutting-edge areas such as real analysis, modern algebra, differential equations and probability theory. All mathematics courses at BGSU introduce new ways of thinking and develop discipline in critical thinking and effective communication.

The 120-credit-hour mathematics degree program at BGSU emphasizes both depth and flexibility. Students develop expertise in mathematical reasoning through courses like Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Foundations and Techniques. They then dive deeper into areas like actuarial science, data analysis and applied computational methods.

Students must also choose a minor.

Mathematics degree specializations at BGSU

The general mathematics B.S. degree program provides a broad mathematical foundation that’s perfect for students seeking maximum flexibility in their career choices.

For those eyeing more specific goals, BGSU offers specialized tracks in three high-demand areas:

  • Applied mathematics – Focuses on mathematical modeling and real-world problem-solving.
  • Actuarial science – Combines mathematics with risk assessment and insurance principles.
  • Data science – Merges statistical analysis with computational programming skills.

Admissions

Prospective BGSU mathematics majors should have four years of college preparatory mathematics in high school. While high school calculus isn’t necessary, the department offers advanced placement with credit for one or two calculus courses for students who take the Advanced Placement exam while in high school.
