BGSU to note graduates’ military service at 275th commencement

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Bowling Green State University will hold its 275th commencement exercises this week. Of the 972 diplomas being granted on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 14 and 15) in the Stroh Center, 202 will be through the Graduate College.

Ceremonies will be held at 7 p.m. Friday for students receiving master’s or doctoral degrees as well as for undergraduates from the colleges of Business Administration, Health and Human Services, Musical Arts, Technology and BGSU Firelands.

Addressing the graduates and their families will be 1982 alumnus Doug Cahill, president and CEO of the Oreck Corp., an industry leader in vacuum cleaners and related products. Cahill has extensive experience in international business leadership roles. Before joining Oreck in 2010, he was president and CEO of Doane Pet Care, taking the company from $1.7 billion to $4 billion in earnings.

The colleges of Arts and Sciences and Education and Human Development will hold commencement exercises at 10 a.m. Saturday. The speaker for the ceremony will be 1975 alumnus Steve Hanson, president and CEO of Hanson Inc., a Toledo digital agency specializing in strategic interactive communications. Hanson is active in a number of Toledo area charities and other philanthropic organizations.

This year for the first time, BGSU graduates who have served or are serving in the military will be sporting red, white and blue cords in addition to their college colors as part of their regalia. Ten degree candidates will have this distinction.

Recognizable by their gold cords will be the 148 undergraduates who are graduating with honors. Students with 110 letter-graded hours and a grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 will graduate cum laude; those with a GPA of 3.75 will graduate magna cum laude, and those who have achieved a 3.9 GPA will graduate summa cum laude.
